I just had a friend of mine give me a couple of pieces of stainless to try making knives out of. The stainless came from a ship building yard area and the friend of mine was unsure of if any of the stainless was able to be hardened.

The 307 stainless is 1/4" x 12"x12" in size. and

The 430 stainless steel 1/8" X 2" x24"

Does anyone know if 307 or 430 can be hardened to the rockwell needed for a good blade.

Lastly if I can use the 430 it sounds like I can get somemore really cheap.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Jim
