In my search for a perfect edge I keep eyeballing the 30k glass shapton for my edge pro. I already have the complete chosera stone set. With strops.

Anyone with experience with the 30k glass shapton to say is it worth the hefty price tag? How does it compare to the 10k chosera? Well worth It or is it a waste of money.

I'm also looking a the atoma 1200 diamond plate. Any opinions on this? It seems pretty optimal. Yay or nay?

I take great pride in having the sharpest blades possible.

Thanks in advance.
Jim.

I have one of the 30K Edge-Pro models. I use it some, but in all honesty, most of the time I go from the 15K to the strop. I think the 15K is worthwhile, but even for honing srtaight razors, you can get be quite nicely without the 30K if you strop on finer compounds. If I didn't strop, the 30K would be necessary, but anyone (me) fanatical enough to sharpen to 15K will always strop.

I consider the 1200 ATOMA a "must have."

The 1200 Atoma is pretty much already ordered as I have noticed the slurry from the chosera stones causing some rounding of the apex.I was hoping the shapton would make it just that much crisper edge.
My knives are far from dull, I'm just chasing the Dragon. As they are hair seems to just jump out of the way from fear. But my OCD makes me want toilet paper to fall apart are the sight of S90V or SR101.

My curiosity will most likely get the better of me and I'll end up with the 30k shapton.

Slurry from your Chosera stones is not rounding your edge, that's just not how it works.

In my research I seen it mentioned a few times that the 10k Chosera and 30k shapton are not all that far apart.

Okay. Ive read enough of your posts to know you are knowledgeable. Do you think the atomas would be a better option? I'm not really saying that the high grit slurry is rounding the apex. But something I see as I go through the grits is doing it. Trust me, I'd rather take the correct action than spend $250 on one stone that wouldn't do much better than a 10k chosera that i aleady have.

The atoms plates are worth every penny but I feel the 140 grit plate holds the most value as a tool.

By rolled edge do you maybe mean a burr?

No I don't believe it is a burr. As I go through the grits there is a haze at the apex that becomes visible once you get to the finer grits. It usually happens when I'm doing a complete re-profile from a factory edge. And I know I'm hitting the apex cause I'm raising a burr with each stone and I know the stones are flat within .002. I check them on a granite plate and feelers gauges.

But the haze goes away on the second sharpening when the roughest stone I use is 1 or 2k.

My water stones are primarily Shapton Glass and Shapton Pro.

I tried a 10K Chocera, and didn't like it at all BECAUSE of the slurry. Some folks like a "muddy" stone. I don't.

And I would respectfully disagree strongly that a 10K Chocera is similar to the 30K Shapton. Mine is far closer to a 12K than a 30.

If you don't mind spending the money and have all the other shapton stones then yes I feel it is worth it. It produces a unique edge that plays well with much finer compounds/strops.

However you NEED the atoma 1200 to flatten it properly. The DMT stuff is too unpredictable for something this fine.

Alright, thanks guys. Looks like I'll start picking up the shaptons and the atoma with my income tax money. And I'll just use the chosera stones on other people knives. (Hey they think factory edges are sharp lol)
