Could you fine folks school me on the 317? It’s been one that has always evaded me, but as I round out my collection, I find myself still interested in them.

As always, a decent bit of digging can find me some pretty good info. I was curious why they stopped making them, what handle variations are available, and what a reasonable price would be on the secondary market for one. I’ve seen a lot of folks post them, and sing their praises, so I’d be curious to hear more about them first hand.

All 317s were made by Camillus under contract to Buck. There were three standard variations, all with sawcut black Delrin handles. Since the knives were made by Camillus, none of them have a date code.—
1972: stamped "Buck/Made In USA"; model number on pile side; handle with brass pins
1972-1974: stamped "Buck/Made In USA" model number on pile side; no handle pins
1974-1989: stamped "Buck/317/USA"

In 1988/1989 a 317 with a serrated secondary blade was made.

Over the years, variations were made with blade art work.

Thank you, I appreciate you being willing to share your knowledge.
I can't help much with the history. They are great knives. I have a couple. One that is factory original and one that a member here deleted the skinning blade. Personally I prefer the single blade version
