In what year did this tang stamp start?

SCHRADE
U.S.A. 34OT

I gave my Schrade 34OT to a friend about 30 yrs. ago.
I decided to get another one, and found it on a popular auction site.
I am trying to determine if the new one, is as old, as the one, I gifted away.

Dating Schrade knives appears to be a guessimation, compared to Case knives
over the past 41 yrs.

Thanks,
Ray

P.S. The friend (not a knife guy) ruined the knife immediately, on a grinder!!!
He has never been given another knife.

Im no expert, so the best I can tell you is sometime post-1973. But they made millions of those great little knives, and all quality, until Schrade closed its doors in 2004. If you are looking for a user, tons are available for great prices, and you will have a knife that will last you a lifetime if you take care of it.

It seems they switched to this 'new' tang stamp on the 34OT in the mid-1980s, and used it until the doors were locked in 2004.

The box/packaging design is probably easier to date.

Thanks - Dave T63 & Bob W
I did win a lightly used 34 OT in excellent condition, for a great price.
Two of the blades appeared untouched, particularly, the spey.
No packaging was included.

Hi from Australia,
Bob W has been on http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/850344-Another-Compliments-Old-Timer-33OT-1983
I have two knives with the date etched on the blade, one is a 1984 "NY USA" and the other a 1984 "Schrade USA" knife.
My SS34OT knives were all made in 1984 and they have a "Schrade Walden" stamped blade.
I would say, Schrade changed to the New stamp mid. 1984.
I have Six New 2003 "34OT" knives they still have the "Schrade USA" stamp.
The 34OT never used the "Schrade+" stamp. Hope this helps... Ken
