Does anyone have pics of these 2 side by side? I have a feeling that they have similar blade geometry. I'm talking about the American made versions, not the imports.
Thanks.

Similar yes. clip, sheepsfoot and spey. Closed length is 3 1/4" (Buck) vs 3 5/16" (Schrade). The spey and sheepsfoot swap positions on these two knives. Don't have a Buck 303 so I can't provide side by side picture.

Biggest difference is 1095 Carbon vs 420 HC Stainless, and I think the Buck is a bit slimmer in profile.

Hi,

Here you go.

Blade grinds

As you can see, the size is the same for all intents and purposes.

The blade grinds are very different. The Schrade is a full flat grind that tapers to almost a zero edge. These blades slice like there is no tomorrow. The Buck has their high hollow grind. They can get incredibly sharp, but I personally feel they aren't the slicing machines the Schrade is.

Some people prefer the straight blades of the three spring wide design of the Buck. Again, personally, I prefer the two springs of the Schrade. This gets me much thinner secondary blades. Which should make for better slicing, at least in my mind.:) And I don't mind the krink of the sheep's foot.

Each has their following. I prefer the 34OT over the 303. But both are fine examples of their breed.

wow! nice pics. I notice the sheepsfoot is where it belongs on the Scrade, how do the blades compare in size?

Those Buck's are the Sherman tanks of the pocket knife world. I tried to kill one for two and a half decades, couldn't do it.

I pick the Schrade hands down. I am biased though...when I was young we had a store that sold Schrades so that is what we bought. Lot's of great memories using them. At that time my friends and I all worked at an old fashioned lumber yard. Our knives where in constant use... and showed it.

Hi,

The blades are very similar in length. The secondary blades show the most difference in shapes. The sheep's foot is wider but thinner on the Schrade than one the Buck. The Buck is more narrow which makes for a slimmer profile.

And the Spey blades are shaped a bit different too. With the Buck being more pen blade like. The Schrade is better shaped for surgical use.

I aint not never rong
I remember reading that Buck contracted Schrade to make their 300 series. Maybe they used the same bodies just different steel, and scales?
Could that be it?

Hi,

Best to ask somebody like 300Bucks, but I think I remember him saying Schrade made some carbon steel blades for Buck. But I might very well be mixed up about that.

embeth, you need at least one of each! And a Camillus, Cold Steel, Queen, S&M, Case......... The list goes on forever.:D:D

Schrade made the first 301's not just the blades, the whole knife, but I think they were still stainless. For two years. I think they made the first 303's too. Then Camillus made them for a while.
