I know what you're thinking. It's impossible to make a good shelter in under an hour or two. I use to agree, up until a few weeks ago.
Riley came up to hang with Marcelo and I, and while we were playing with knives in Marcelo's backyard we decided to make a debri hut.

Let me guess, you want pics of this so called "good debris hut"

Well here it is. Big enough for two "average height" men:thumbup:

Or 1 full figured fella :p

Or even 4 aspiring juvenile delinqui... I mean lovely kids:thumbup:

If you look, there is about 24" inches of leaves on the forward part of the shelter, The height of the leaves are carried all the way to the rear. So there is probably tripple the height of the leaves closer to the rear.

So how did we pile that many leaves and twigs on a debri hut that quickly you ask. Well, Marcelo has a extensive survival kit. He used the right tool for the job, and we all should get one.

You may need to rethink your altoids can though.....

 sweet job man i like it, plus in that last shot you can barely tell its there. good concealment.

p.s. your late to the train station on that one buddy. everyone here already edc's a leaf blower

That is a nice shelter, and I am jealous of Marcelo's backyard! I will have to see where I can fit a leaf blower into my kit too, looks damn handy :D

Nice although a critque? Need to blow some more inside for insulation on the ground. I think you need to add about 2 minutes to your shelter time.:p

Question? Has anyone constructed a rake from the natural surroundings? May not be as fast as a leaf blower but seems like it would speed up shelter construction if you just had a knife and some cordage.

I've never made a rake before, but I usually lay my tarp or space blanket down and then get a Hemlock branch with allot of little brances hanging off. Then I rake or sweep all the leaves onto the tarp. Then pick up the tarp and poor on top.

I think that you HAVE made a rake, then.

If every broken piece of flint found within 1000 miles of a proposed settlement of primitive man is a "knife" or "hand ax," then a branch used as a rake IS a rake...

Man, the further I read, the more I could feel that hook going deeper in my jaw . . . :) You would think after 50+ years on the planet, I would learn to listen to my 5.85 . . . The shot of all the "rug rats" in the hut would be a great card front for Christmas or any holiday. Amazing how "angelic" they look sometimes, huh . . . :D
Good post,
Be safe.

Going to buy a new leaf blower to EDC now. Wonder what people at work will think of me now

That was awesome

very valid point indeed.. thanks for the post.....these things take time, I recently built my first one... and it took close to 3 hours.. (wish I had my psk blower)

It was designed just for me as it has zero clearance once you're in it..

the scenario: survival without a knife or fire to sustain the night with temps down to zero degrees.. (i did have a 4" knife on me I used to cut the ridge)

the floor has over 12" of leaves packed down 3 different times, I didn't get around to making a pancake door but you get the idea...

if you've never built one, you need to as these take a 'lot' more time then you'd think, I was very surprised even raked by hand it takes time..

this design should be that of a mummy bag, and keep you warm and toasty down to single digits..

Cool stuff! Maybe I could still squeeze one of those in an altoids, but it might require I put 5 ranger bands to hold the lid in place rather than the usual 3!

Or 1 full figured fella!!!!!!!!! that's great!!!!! I got a leaf blower just not one attached to my pack!!!!

although I've yet to sleep in one, my thoughts are you just pull remaining leaves behind you once you're in, but for a door I'd take green pliable branches and form a basket and put leaves in it etc..

then again you 'could' make a vestibule.:D then add a door..
