35mm film containers were once abundant and free. They were my standard for tinder, short matches, salt paks, and the like for PSK's

As film photography goes away, the film containers are drying up.

If not free, what fills that niche that would work as well and is at least inexpensive?

I found some nice pill containers that were superior to the film containers for 3/$1.00 at our local discount drug store, but then they disappeared. Other things I have tried leaked WPJ in hot weather.

????

How about contact lens cases, the barrel ones with the shared reservoir for solution, and lens 'baskets' on the lid?

I saved my last two for this very reason. The basket is just a push fit so a popped em off.
They are screwfit lids and proven to be water tight. Sadly I usually recieve the twin pot cases

Sometimes I save old paracetamol tubs and the like, but they usually only have push on lids.

I would think old prescription pill bottles would be of fairly ample and cheap supply.

Nalgene makes some tough little jars that might be up your ally. I use them for pills and such, and you could select a size to suit. Threaded lid, water tight. Another option would be to try some of the aluminum containers floating around the bay. some of them are quite big, no ideas on how consistent the quality is.

All sorts of containers available all over the place.

As for 35 mm film canisters,I often find the real old school aluminum ones at flea markets, vintage antique shops etc..

Usually no more than a buck or two a piece. I'm old enough to remember 35mm film in these and just tossing them away without a second thought:(

Thank you for all the input.

If I were willing to pay $1.00 each for something that was once free, I would have no problem. The 35mm's, as observed, are out there. As are all manner of cunning little containers that usually cost more than $1.00. Since I am usually giving these kits away, price is an object.

So far as I can tell, after talking to CVS, Walgreen's and Walmart, even the smallest pill bottles are significantly larger than a 35mm. They are also easier to break than the plastic 35mm's from experiments I have performed. (The Walgreen's guy gives me the pill bottles people turn in when getting a refill as they cannot be legally reused by Walgreens - or so he says.)

Some vitamin containers are good. I've got a Berocca tub here that I use for a handline kit. Bit thinner than a 35mm tub and about 3 high, or more specifically 13cm*3. Makes a handy bobbin and stops me cracking floats. Got one full of cotton wool in the FAK - holds an amazing amount.

It is a surprise how much cotton can be crammed into such a small container.

I went to Sam's club about 2 years ago & they gave me every 35mm canister they had. 167 of 'em. I'm stocked for life.:D

Some brands of test strips for blood glucose testing come in nice containers that are a bit smaller than the 35mm film containers. My son is diabetic, and I saved a few of his.

I carry a small bottle of Excedrin in my briefcase, probably just a hair larger than a 35mm can. I've seen other types of sample size/travel size toiletries and such in the drug stores. I haven't looked them with thise type of use in mind but some of them might be a reasonable size.

The most common contact lens case O__O holds two large cotton balls. Can't find them under 1.00/ea unless I buy wholesale 100/$36.00
