Have any of you guys seen or heard of anyone putting handle scales on a BM 375? I'm not a fan of paracord wrap, and I need more girth in a handle than how they come from the factory. I'm contemplating making some my self, but figured I'd ask before I do. TIA, Brad.

I have not seen or heard of it but if you have the tools for some simple shaping you could make your own. I have put handles on knife blanks that I've bought, and also on skeleton knives that I've bought. I do it like custom makers do- glue the scales to the blade tang, put bolts or pins through the scales, then grind them down to shape. Some people like to shape their scales off of the tang and bolt them on so that they are removable. This could be done too but seems to me it takes a different approach and maybe a little more work. I think the idea is that if you have a blade material that is not stainless, you might need to remove the scales to clean under them. With the material that the 375 is made out of I don't think this is necessary. The Spyderco Mules are popular with people that add their own scales, and I've seen some of these that have scales glued on and some that have scales bolted on.

PS- I was just looking at photos of the 375 and the tang seems to have rounded edges, so it might need to have the blade tang ground down a little bit before scales could be glued on.

Thanks for the input, you pretty much said what I was thinking. I've never made scales before, but my plan was to get a chunk of some kind of burl wood then epoxy and corby bolt it to the handle, then shape and oil it. I would probably be smarter and money ahead to send it off to let a professional do it, but i also want to start learning how to make a knife from start to finish, so this might be a good place to start. If I didnt get Benchmades at ridiculous prices I wouldn't risk screwing one up, but i got this one at close to what a blank costs. Thanks again, Brad

Woodcraft sells many different types of exotic wood in "knife scale" packaging. Most are $10-20.

TechDoc - I had planned on going over to weeodcraft to see what they had, thanks for letting me know they do carry scales. I'll post pics of how it turns out. Brad.

Here are the ones they have listed on their website. LINK. My local store had many of these.

What tools are needed to make these wood scales (other than just hand-carving them with a knife) ? I may play around and try this.

BTW, I think "Weedcraft" is a new pot store in Colorado.

I've bought from

They carry a lot of various wood blocks and scales. In addition they are a supporting member of Bladeforums, unlike the previous link. Support folks that support the hobby.

As far as what tools are needed, the same tools one would use for shaping any other sort of handle scales. Respirator, sand paper, rasps/files, saw of some type, and anything else you can think of that will help finish the job correctly. You don't really hand carve handle scales. It can be done, but unless you are a high precision, professional craftsman, it isn't likely to turn out well. Especially with the advent and wide spread use of power tools.
