3D printers? What's good or Bad?

I have a small project that needs some custom parts made and I am thinking buying a 3D printer may be a good option. However, I have no idea what is good or bad at various price points.

What should I definitely avoid and what should I definitely seek out? How precise can I make a thread or channel in a 3D object? Basically, I need "thread jack" that fits over a 35mmx35mm LED that I can adjust to focus the reflector and keep it centered in the opening.

What price range should I be shopping in to get a good quality printer that will last over the long run and have long term support?

TIA,
Sid
