3D printing scales?

Hi guys, so I have this idea.

I've seen 3D printing become more popular with lionsteels new 3d printed Titanium frame and such. So I was thinking, could you 3d print a factory knife scale (like for an xm-18)? Most 3d printers use a form of polymer to print, and some printers are as precise as 15microns!

I know you can not print materials like g10, micarta, etc, but the reason I ask is, say if I could print scales for an xm-18, then I wouldn't need to worry about ruining the factory scales when making my own in g10/micarta version! I could simply use the printed scale as a "guide" and grind the micarta/g10 to shape without having to match up to the frame itself.

I like making scales, but I hate messing with the factory ones in the process. You only get 1 chance!

Yep you sure can! i have access to a 3D printer through my school and ive been playing with the idea for a while.

I have been wondering about the durability of thin scales for knives with liners (say for a benchmade 940) printed with todays available printers. If they aren't here yet, it shouldn't be much longer....

That's exactly what I'm talking about! I'm glad to see its been done already, so now it will be easier for me to learn.

If you dont mind me asking, what is your major? (assuming you're in college)

I want to major in something involved with CNC, CAD, 3D printing etc...

Can't speak for him, but I majored in Mechanical Engineering and had the chance to use all of those frequently.
