Anyone try this belt yet?

I was ordering some more supplies and the retailer told me they got some in and were supposed to be 3M's answer to the Blaze belt from Norton.

Anywho, I got two 60 grit (they only come in 36, 60, and 80 it seems) to try them out. Had never heard of them and can't find anything on them. Just wondering if anyone had tried and what they thought before they get here.

I have been using them for some time now and well pleased. I switched to them from the 964 Cubitron and feel that they not only cut better but have better belt life as well . You should like them.

They might be a bit better than the blaze.

It's hard to tell so far, as I haven't killed one yet.

Damned fine belt, but I understand they are a bunch more money.

I had a rep give me a bunch.

Hard to believe they'd be better than the 967s' but I'll try a few, next time I order.

Don,

Glad you caught my typo 964/967. Pop sent me one to try last fall when they first came out and I was impressed enough to reorder. So far I've only used them in 36 grit as that was all that was available to start with but have liked them so far.

I got mine from Pop's as well. The 60 grit was $7.50 which is the same price as Blaze from TruGrit. The last Blaze I ordered was from Jantz and they charge me $8.95 for 50 grit and they charge the same for 60 grit so that's why I said they were cheaper. I didn't realize Jantz was going to be that much more expensive. That's 20% more for crying out loud. Jeeze, I need to shop around more.

Ive been using them for a couple weeks now. They are great. Cut very well and leave a nice finish. Need to do a side by side to the Norton R980Ps.

I've been using them for 4 months and really like them. Its the longevity as well as a very aggressive cut that keeps me ordering them. The 36 then switching to 60's is a great combo.

I got a few of them along with a few blaze belts so I can find out first hand which I like.

I used the blaze first and was amazed how long they lasted compared to the belts I have used in woodworking over the years. But then I noticed they left alot of crud stuck to my platen and I also noticed half of my blaze belts didnt have the grit number wrote anywhere ?? If I was making sandpaper I would see to it that the grit was labeled on the belt??

Then I tried the Cubitron II .... I dont see me ever ordering another blaze belt.

Been using the 984f in 36, 60 and 80 for a while now and I've got to say; Not only do they last longer than any other, but they cut like a new belt longer than any other belt out there.

I still like the 967s though, because they are designed to cut at lower speeds.

Both the 967 and 984f are way above the 977 in performance!

Pops put me on to them ,too. I am happy with them.

As a structured abrasive, they are meant to grind with high pressure and moderate speed. The pressure will fracture worn grits and expose new cutting edges. If used too lightly, or too fast, they glaze up and don't cut well. I would bet that a lot of folks who only get a blade or two from a cubitron or similar belt are discarding a nearly new belt. I break more than wear them out. Most break from leaning into it too long and hard at a session. Allow some cool off time every few minutes.

A trick to restore a glazed belt is to use a 100 grit flattening stone or a coarse grit grinding wheel to dress the belt at medium speed. Wear face and lung protection, as it will throw a lot of grit at you.

I have used several of them and love the way they grind but I have had 2 or 3 of the 80 grit ones that weren't spliced straight and the edges of the belt wobble side to side when turning on the grinder. Anyone else had this issue with them?

I dunno anybody that's got 2 foot by 72 foot belts, but if you mean 2"x72" (just giving you a hard time. ;) ), Pop's Knife Supply has the best prices, and Pop and his wife are a two person, small business, with excellent service, who'll do anything for you that they can.

I also, love the 984F belts. I have occasionally gotten one out of a dozen that just seems to suck, but they're the best belts available regardless.

Haven't used the Cubitron belts but the 9in grinding discs they make are ridiculously abrasive and last forever!
