I've done searches on this forum, tried to do some research on the Collectors-r-us site hasn't shed any light, so I thought I'd ask the experts. I won this C641 on ebay today. Instead of the cocobolo handles, it has a scrim handle with a whale on it. Can anybody tell me whether this was ever issued by Schrade, or if maybe someone took it upon themselves to customize it. I just know I've never seen another.

Any thoughts or info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Dave

Dave,
Please post pictures of it when it arrives.
Interested in the back handle too.
Looks like a custom from here.

Got this in the other day. Irv, I would have to agree on it being a custom. Looking along the inside edge of the front scale, there is either a black liner, or some really thich black adhesive. No pins, either. Both front and back scales stand a little proud of the bolsters on both ends. Back is plain, but nice pattern in the material. Don't know what the material is, but it doesn't appear to be the same material Schrade used on their scrims. Nice knife, all the same, and in my opinion, I certainly got my money's worth at $33.

As good as the scrim looks it appears that the material maybe ivory, usually scrims only come out that sharp looking if it's done on the real Mcoy, nice addition Dave!

Dave, can you get a good close up pic of handle material on scrimshaw side ?
do you think it is synthetic or natural material ?

Dave, definitely looks like ivory, the pile side actually looks like mammoth. That's the artists's mark on the lower left corner. I've seen it before on another knife but I'll be darned if I can recall where. If I find it I'll post. It's a custom for sure.

Eric,
Thanks for the info, and the link. Honestly, I hadn't even noticed the mark as being intentional. I thought maybe it was some of the black adhesive that got on the handle during the customization. But once I looked again, then at your link, I see you're right. ANd the material on the back side has some nice depth to it. Don't know if it's mammoth, but it's nice.
Again, will try some more pics in the morning.

OK, I took some more pics oustide today. They are slightly better than the ones I've already posted. Hopefully you can see more in them.

Hmmm, hard to say definitively, but i think scrimshaw side is too shiny for ivory.
my guess is both sides are synthetic.
if you post in BRL forum, most likely, handle material and artist's mark will be identified.
