Recommendation? 3rd party axe photo hosting

So, we all are affected by Photobucket's pocket-lining. The users that had free accounts pretty much are left with no access and many of our threads here are pretty messed up.

I just finished downloading all of my material from them one by one because all of the compiled zip files are corrupted and won't open and now am wondering what alternative solid 3rd party picture hosts other members are using.

Just looking for recommendations but definitely feel free to express your love for the unannounced $400 extortion fee, loss of your pictures, or the fact that many of our awesome threads with how-to's, history, and research are now Swiss cheese.

I might pay a small yearly fee to ensure access and reliability but even if Photopunk said, "Ok, Ok, Ok, it's back to what it was" I would shun them for their poor business decisions.

Any ideas?

Shoulda replied to this thread instead of the other one, but I quit using photobucket quite a few years ago. Been using Flickr - but I used to care, and pay attention, and I don't really anymore so for all I know Flickr might be bad as well - it is owned by yahoo after all (without the extortion fees). I made my yahoo e-mail account in the mid/late 90s and I guess I shouldn't talk too much trash, they're still here and it still works.

The unfortunate thing about global electronic records is they'll have been corrupted, made obsolete or unreadable by improved programming, intentionally or accidentally deleted, or priced out of sight. I don't know what to say about PB since they've been free (but with increasingly more frequent and irritating ads) up until now but if this means all picture links to forum submissions I've made over the past 4 years will have been blocked or wiped out I'll be much more leery of putting any faith in cloud hosts in the future.

I'd recommend Imgur https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Imgur it doesn't look like it's going paid ever, I too get rather upset when companies offer a free service to build up their customer base and then out of the blue make you pay to use it, understandably costs increase as traffic does but there are other ways to find funding.. donors for example or adding a premium aspect to the service, Hulu did a good job of this but slowly.. disappointingly the entire service became paid (although cheap enough) however now their greed exceeds and even as a paid subscriber you have to upgrade to watch a bunch of Showtime content so I dropped it.

I use Facebook and Google+. Facebook s easier but Google+ gives you more quality.

I appreciate the input.

Flickr seems to work well, though I feel like there may be an extra step to find the portion of the url that works with the "insert picture link" here on the forums. Being auto-generated is handy but only if it gives you the right format for what you need. I had to cut and paste from the middle of a longer one. - might be that I am missing something.

Flickr doesn't have a free editor. There is an upgrade option to "Pro" which enables functions like filters, editing, resizing, stats, etc. once your picture is uploaded. Pricing is per month or through an annual plan.

Imgur is free and comes across as simpler and maybe more intuitive, same image results here in the forums as far as I can tell. There is more of a social media influence/portal attached to it from the initial vibe - that probably isn't necessary to just use it as a picture host for sharing material. There doesn't seem to be a paid upgrade option that I can find offered.
Imgur does has basic editing and filters without an extra fee.

Both Flicker and Imgur seem to allow "right click, copy image address, inset link, and paste" to bring up the same sized image from the link function here. I, as well as others I guess, appreciate being able to repost images that easily from previous/other threads.

*If you follow someone's link to their pages, Flickr probably seems the more refined of the two.

The last few years I've mainly stayed away from social media so the 3rd party linking is kind of what I really need to post pictures in these styles of forums.

I see Facebook and Google+ mentioned - do they have the same basic features and ease of linking pictures? Did you choose them because of how they integrate with social media as a built-in function?

Postimage.org is what I now use and it's simple.
Currently I'm seeing no downsides to it over anything else, and I like how it's not a form of social media such as flickr or something.
All I need it to do is host images for me to post, and it does its job well.

And you don't even need an account with them.

Postimage does seem pretty simple. Signup is easy with an auto generated password that you can change. Links are provided to share multiple platforms. No obvious upgrade options and not editing function that I see.

Provides the same 3rd party hosting function with less fanfare.

I uploaded a photo then created a gallery. I don't think you are able to move your uploaded photos into a gallery for organization, you would want to directly upload them with the intent to have them in a gallery. Not a problem - the price is right lol.

Use GIMP. It's photoshop lite but still very full featured and it's FREE!!!

I use Facebook. . .
This may or may not be a concern for you, but maybe someone else. FWIW

Facebook is not a hosting site per se. It can be used for that and I have at times. I've more recently heard that Facebook internally renames the images at some point. Earlier I found a photo on my FB account that I posted on this forum. I looked up that post and the image no longer appears. The address changing was obviously true in my case. What FB does currently or how often it is done, IDK.

Not defending Flickr. Just an example of the way I use it.

Hit share in Flickr. Choose BBCode, select a size, and copy the link:

In BFC paste the link directly into the editor - you are done. You don't need to hit link, paste, and hit OK.

BUT if you do not want the description at the bottom of the picture, highlight the "second set of URLs" and hit delete:

You can also take the description out if you Preview... the post. Just use the editor, highlight the text and hit delete:

Nice, thank you Bob. I was only using the insert picture link function here.

Good looking hammer btw

Exactly. Here is a related issue. There are some threads here that I (and maybe some others) wouldn't mind keeping around but that requires replacing the picture links from PhotoExtorters to those from a new host.

Number one, that is tedious.

Number two, our new forums have a 20 image max and a 10,000 character limit which limits editing pre-forum changeover posts that exceed either one of two those conditions.

That makes it even harder.

My photobucket images work only because I bought into their lowest tier plan last year - that will expire. I will absolutely not renew or give them the time of day even they reneg on their current actions.

Well that's a bummer, definitely feels like I wasted my time hahaha.

I don't think I'll re-uploaded, too much time.

Currently time is at a premium for me.

Bob

That's true, I didn't notice it. Thank you for the advice!
