I plan to get a SMF and there are 3 steel choice which one is the best among these 3? From googled, PD-1 and Z-WEAR are quit similar in makeup but I sure if its really the same.

3V is a lower carbon version of the formula that these three steels are derived from. The original was Vascowear, now discontinued. 3V will have a little less wear resistance but greater toughness. PD#1 and Z wear are so similar in composition that any difference in performance between them will be from heat treat differences. These steels are designed as an upgrade to D2 in toughness and wear resistance, with lower corrosion resistance than D2. 3V and the two other steels are all pretty close in corrosion resistance. Not bad, above A2 but less than D2. All these are provided good heat treatments. They are very good hard use steels for a Strider IMO. All 3 are powder steel rather than ingot. Take your pick. They are all excellent and in the same class performance wise. Cruwear is another one similar to PD#1 and Z wear. Jim Ankerson has some tests in his database on wear resistance on rope you can look at. http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/793481-Ranking-of-Steels-in-Categories-based-on-Edge-Retention-cutting-5-8-quot-rope
