Is a 4-1/2" vise large enough to use for knife making? I am looking at a Record 3TON-3VSB that has a swivel base as it seems to be the best made vise available locally.

Those are very nice vises and will work well for you.
There are two of them in my shop. Did make soft covers for the jaws out of 1/8x1 aluminum angle with a magnetic strip glued on, to prevent marking knives.
