California's knife laws are sort of schizo(like everything else in Cali). It has some mentions of size. I have asked a few officers while I was in Cali out of curiosity. I got answers from 4" to 3.5" to "0 - they are not legal at all". Officers tend to arrest first and ask questions later. So be careful.
"626.10. Any person, except [listed officials] who brings
or possesses any dirk, dagger, knife having a blade longer
than 3-1/2 inches, folding knife with a blade that locks
into place, a razor with an unguarded blade... upon the
grounds of, or within any public school... is guilty of a
misdemeanor. "
The Ca code states 2.5" for state universities and 4" for "...any state or local public building or at any meeting required to be open to the public..."
CA code with regards to "switchblades"
California Penal code Section 653K
"Every person who possesses in the passenger's or driver's area of any motor vehicle in any public place or place open to the public, carries upon his or her person, and every person who sells, offers for sale, exposes for sale, loans, transfers, or gives to any other person a switchblade knife having a BLADE TWO (2) OR MORE INCHES IN LENGTH is guilty of a misdemeanor. For the purposes of this section, "switchblade knife" means a knife having the appearance of a pocketknife and includes a spring-blade knife, snap-blade knife, gravity knife or any other similiar type knife, the blade or blades of which are TWO (2) OR MORE INCHES LONG and can be released automatically by a flick of a button, pressure on the handle, flip of the wrist or other mechanical device, or is released by the weight of the blade or by any type of mechanism whatsoever."
I have heard that they just recently struggled to make folders with thumbstuds legal, let alone assisted openers. Good luck to y'all in Cali.
In Texas, the blade can be no longer than 5.5" fixed or folding to be concealed. However, if you have a concealed carry permit this is usually overlooked by the locals in my area - though still illegal technically. There is a gray area here as well - you can use any size knife for hunting and camping or travelling by horse or otherwise. However, in my experience with LEO's, having known many and worked with them, they are more concerned about your behavior and conduct and whether you are armed with a gun and have a permit or not.
