Two quite similar pocket knives, the Victorinox Pioneer and the Camillus US Army “DEMO” pocket knife

Handling and general feelings:
both are robust and generally well made pocket knives. No blade play, good walk and talk for both. Springs are sturdy for both. Camillus is a bit bigger in dimension than Victorinox, and a bit heavier too. Camillus it’s also a bit thicker than Victorinox. Fit and finish is better in Victorinox. Victorinox is the most comfortable in hand, because of his well rounded edges on the handle, while Camillus has non-rounded edges

Ok, let’s thy them. First of all, tent pegs

Victorinox

Camillus

End of this trial: Victorinox win, as per the cleaner cutting efficiency in front to the Camillus. I don’t mean that Camillus is a bad wood carver, just Vic it’s a bit better

Next trial, making guy runners. Interesting because of both of the knives had a reamer (or awl, as you like)

Victorinox

Camillus

End of this trial: both at the same level, no winner

Let’s show the final work.
Victorinox

Camillus

to be continued...

The knives in hand:

Conclusion: the winner is the Victorinox, as per the better level of fit and finish and the better cutting efficiency. Reamers instead are at the same level.

Ciao,
Alfredo

Its fun to see these knives used in this manner and compared, Alfredo. Thank you for that.

Well done Alfredo! I was going to get the Camillus just after they closed their doors but they sold out and I ended up getting my first Alox Victorinox a Cadet which I was crazy about! This makes me want to run out and get a Pioneer; wait I already have one....

and I like it even better then my old Cadet! Still my favorite scout!

Martineden, Nice review! I gave up on "Demo" knives in 1971, after I had three of them break back springs in as many years in Vietnam and went to a Victorinox SAK, which I have carried ever since. If this comparison had been between a Demo knife and A Farmer SAK, with a saw blade, then there would have been no comparison, the Farmer would be hands down the better knife. John

The same for me
Broken back spring (not in Vietnam)
And the Farmer with the saw....

Very interesting Alfredo, a great comparison, and educating for me at the same time - thank you.

I dunno, Duncan. This is a thread from about a year ago. Martineden hasn't been on BF for a couple of months now.

Hey Frank, I just gotta show that I am up with the times you know! ummmm ( looking for something/someone to blame ).....

:o

I'm shocked to hear about those broken springs. I hope C. fixed them before I got mine.
I have a couple of each knife. The Vic is prettier and easier to carry, but I always felt the Camillus edge lasted longer on seasoned wood. I also rounded off the sharp handles on mine to make it a little easier on the hands and pockets.
