Hi,

My wife and I recently went on a 4 day canoe trip in Ontario. Weather was perfect.

The first pic below is the beginning of a portage route between 2 lakes, and the second photo is the end of one of the portage trails down into the next lake:

Here is some of the flora:

One of our campsites, and a pic of our Clark NX-250 hammock... it was wonderful to be able to take an afternoon snooze in the hammock without being bother by bugs :)

There's our canoe, fully loaded for the next leg:

I tried starting a fire by friction using materials nearby. I found some willow, and carved the baseboard, drill, etc. The wood for the baseboard was unfortunately a bit green, though it looked dead and dry when I took it. I wasn't successful, although the whole project and failed attempts took about 3 hours! Oh, well... I brought all the stuff home and will try again when it's very dry:

Great pics, Walkabout,

Thanks for sharing. I haven't had the chance to get out for a multi-day canoe trip yet this season, but I definitely will in June. You really couldn't have picked a better window, weather wise. I'm going to look into one of those hammocks. How do you find them, in terms of set-up / take-down and packing?

All the best,

- Mike

Hi,

The set-up and take down is quick (5-10 min). I use the optional straps that they sell, which wrap around the tree. I tied several Alpine butterfly knots into the support lines for the hammock, and use climbing carabiners to hook the lines to the loops in the web. This makes for easy and quick adjustments. With a compression stuffsack that I picked up at MEC, it ends up being the size of a basketball (including the separate rain fly).

Walkabout, looks like you had a great time. See anyone else in those four days or did you have complete solitude? Who makes the hat, that is sweet.

Thanks :)
We didn't see anyone for the whole 4 days. It was before the May long weekend here, and usually it's a bit cool for many people. It was actually very warm.

The hat is an Akubra Tablelands model. I put the chin strap in myself, to make sure it stays on while paddling.

That Looks like one hell of a great time. Thanks for the pics, thanks alot!!!!:thumbup::thumbup:

That looks great. My wife and I did 10 days in Algonquin Park a few years ago, very memorable trip. Mac

Amazing pics, beautiful country! With the exception of a few pics, it looks alot like the AuSable River here in Northern, Mi.

Very nice area. I noticed that there is not a lot of undergrowth, more like what I see in the Sierras. Even the picture of the reflection on the water shows a pretty open forest on the opposite shore. That seems unusual for your area. Is it due to extensive bedrock with little soil cover?

Yes... everything is on rock, with a fairly thin moss/soil cover. In a good wind there can be quite a few downed trees due to their shallow roots. We had one land a few feet from our tent a couple of years ago during a thunderstorm

Here is another photo from the trip... this is quite typical of the forest there:

This is a great thread.
I'm looking this thread repeatedly since I've found this morning.
Really amazing.
Thanks for sharing, Walkabout.
