4-MAX in jeans pockets . . . what's it like?

The heaviest folder I've ever carried was 6.3 oz., and my EDC is 5.0 oz. -- but the delightfully overbuilt 4-MAX is calling to me. With no way to handle one before buying, I'm curious how it carries in jeans pockets.

My jeans are nothing special, just Old Navy regular fit. The pockets are nice and deep, so I'm not concerned about length. The 5/8" thickness is only 1/8" than my current EDC, so no worries there either.

But the weight gives me pause. I know jeans pockets can swallow a fair amount of weight -- 6.3 oz. is barely noticeable -- but I've also found that when it comes to knives, an ounce or two can really change how it feels.

How's the 4-MAX feel clipped to your jeans pocket?

feels like a big knife. sits nicely to the side of pocket for its size. i dont mind bigger thicker folders. many folks do.

Thanks for the replies!

the weight doesn't bother me, the width does take up most of the pocket though.

I hadn't really considered the width. I haven't had much luck finding comparison photos, but it looks like it'd ride sort of like the Manix 2 XL.

I ve thought about getting the 4 Max when I found it on a tempting sale this summer. But the weight also deterred me. I got the SR1 instead and am pleased with the strength of this folder but it is about as heavy as I want to carry in a pocket and it is 2 oz lighter than the 4 Max.
I don't know if I ll be able to identify a knife task that benefits from the increased weight and strength of the 4 Max. My Recon 1 seems to handle everything I need a work knife to do.
Maybe if I handle one, I ll think differently.

pocket clip on 4max is better than sr1 and recon1. stays put and can be taken out without ripping pocket. thats a big advantage on many cold steel folders. clips with sandpaper or plastic peaks that shred pocket scales makes me not want to carry unless i bend the clip, or sand the scales. 4max didnt have to do that.

It’s a beast, but carries well. That being said, my SR1 is my current EDC folding prybar. But that’s just because I want something to beat on-it’s nota knock on the 4Max. And while the SR1 is quite excellent, it’s not in the 4Max’s class-the difference is obvious once you handle both.

I’ve heard some say that the SR1 will scratch your itch for a 4Max if the latter is out of your price range. That is only true if you’ve never handled a 4Max.

I bet that s right. I don t doubt the high quality of the 4Max with the attention Mr Demko paid to customer returns of early productions. With reviews comparing it to custom Demko s, I would really like to hold one. But then I might be tempted to buy it, and it would join my small number of expensive knives that cost too much for me to carry and use. It would go into storage beside my CRK, my Hinderers, and my Strider and I would examine and admire it once and a while.
I know, it s a personal hangup. I admire fine knives, but I can t bring myself to risk damage or loss of my nicest knives. The weight of the 4 Max would probably really keep me from carrying it if my SR1 was available.
(I may still get one.... It s an illness!).

I've used mine pretty much every day around the ranch, opening hay bales, scraping wire, cutting hose or tubbing, trimming leather, used it to pry some wood loose on a fence i was rebuilding ect. Its a tough sucker and really holds a nice edge.

Yup Dave...and it's surprisingly thin behind the edge...Andrew is the genius of overbuilt blades that still will SLICE like a knife is supposed to!

I think it’s manageable but pretty much the limit. I’ve been using cargo shorts with it in the back pocket.

I carry mine in carhartt pocket. It does take up a lot of space, but clipped in it rides well. Great knife. The SR1 is in my regular nylon field pants pocket. Rougher scales but still not bad for carry.
