I got this 4# Plumb Cedar pattern axe head back in the summer of 2015. It was pretty rusty and had a mushroomed pole. Toward the end of that summer I cleaned it up, sharpened it and posted it in the What Did You Sharpen Today thread. This last winter I decided to sand the entire head to 600 grit just for kicks. It was so much fun that I will probably never do that again.
In early spring I decided that I would shape a haft for it. I found a chunk of ash up in my rafters. Grain orientation wasn't great but I am trying not to care so much about that these days as long as there isn't nasty grain run out. Anyway, I have been on a straight haft kick recently so I decided to make a curved haft for this one.
It got a poplar wedge I do believe.
I used a few coats of straight BLO with sanding between coats to 220 and then added a couple coats of a Tongue oil/BLO mix. I like the color that the ash turned with the coats of oil.
I've taken it out for a couple test drives and it splits pretty nice and feels good in the hands. Overall I am happy with how this project turned out after so many years.
