I'll admit it, I'm stumped! A friend of mine knows exactly what he wants. A 4" blade, wood handled, production (custom is out as he's only going to spend $200) folder with a pocket clip. The closest I've found is Delta-Z at 3.5". Any suggestions?

I'm stumped too. Wood is hard to find on production, short of multi blade folders.

BM 690, rosewood scales, CF bolsters, alas, a 3.25" blade.

None are at 4", but a few ideas:

Maybe find a production blade w/ screwed-on scales, have Frank Recupero make him a set of cheap slabs of cocobolo (cheap but nice stuff). Not sure what he'd charge, maybe $50 to $70??, but maybe someone will have Frank's web page, etc.

4" blade is going to be hard to find. You might check out the Kellam line from Scandinavia. They've recently added some modern style folders to their traditional fixed blade lines. I have one with bone bolsters and great looking wood scales. The blade is 3.5", but it's a quality piece with great steel for under $100. They're starting to show up at on-line dealers.

I think the Kellam knives top of at 3.5 inches and I think come with a knife pouch not a clip, but I could be wrong.

Your friend is going to have a tough time finding a blade over 3.5 inches in a production wood handled folder. The only one I know of is the Katz Cutlery Cheetah. It has a 3.75 inch blade and comes with a cherry wood handle. The only problem is it has a knife pouch, not a clip.

Good luck with your search.

Check out the production for sale by individual section. there is a beautiful Benchmade Mdl 710 with ironwood scales for sale. Sort of semi-custom. It is about 200.00 and has a 4" blade and Axis lock, and beautiful wood handle slabs. Just a thought.

EKA (Swedish manufacturer) has many wood handled lock backs. Blades are made of 12C27 and carbonsteel, handles are made of bubinga (african hardwood).
Your friend will find those hard to find but www.tool-shop.com has some models available.

By the way, having owned one of the 3.5 in olive briar wood I can say the Delta-Z folders are absolutely top notch. One thing though - they do not put clips on any natural materials (wood, stag, bone). They could, because the wood has full steel liners to screw it into, they just don't.

I picked up a Cocobolo Boker Brend for about the same bucks. Lots of eye appeal but not built well. The liner lock was so weak it developed an "S" curve and rubbed the blade on the way in and out. The bolster/handle/frame was also very weak. I could feel the pieces shift against each other when I gripped it. I love boker's traditional lock-backs and slip-joints, but don't trust their liner-locks.

Lots of good ideas here guy's. Thanks for all the replies. Right now I'm looking at a Kershaw 1416 I bought a while ago. 3.65 inch blade, pocket clip, liner lock, stainless liners, G-10 scales. Wonder if I can still find my workshop?
