I'm thinking about buying a 4" x 36" belt sander to clean up 440C and ATS34 prior to grinding. Harbor Freight has two for the same price, one is 4000fpm and the other is 2168fpm. Any recommendations? Thanks.

Tom,I think I would go with the lower rpm, after all, thats what everyone seems to be trying to do,ie:slow down their grinders.:)

I bought a 6 by 48 for the same purpose and it just doesn't bite as agressively as a 2" wide belt on a contact wheel. I think you'd be much better off buying even the cheapest 2 by 72 or 2 by 48 grinder with a contact wheel, or building one.

this belt on a 2x72 is designed for this only .works well. the 4x36 is great for trueing up handle woods.

I do all my blade grinding on my Bader. I'm just looking for a way to get the scale and scratches off the profiled blades without wasting good 2" x 72" belts. I think I might as well quit fooling around and build me a better platen for my Bader, the one that came with it is a piece of junk. All they did is mill a couple of slots in a piece of angled stock and paint it black. I've got a piece of carbon steel out in the shop that's about the right size for a platen.
Thanks.

About the only belts available for a 4x36 that don't wear out in the blink of an eye on steel are klingspor planer belts. They're supposed to eat wood like candy and allow you to use your belt sander like a planer. They have a ceramic grit or somehting like that. The other belts available for a 4x36 are mostly aluminum oxide and get dull really quickly.

Tom,I did'nt know this was for removing mill scale.Found out a trick on another forum recently, get a long bread pan fill it with white vinegar, let the steel lay in the stuff overnight. You can reuse the vinegar over and over.
