40-64 Hunter

I acquired a 40-64 folding hunter. I’m wondering if sharpening and/or cleaning up nicks on the blade etc will lower it’s value.

Are you really concerned about its value? If you are going to carry it and use it, you will need to sharpen it. If you plan on selling it, from what I understand, you should leave it alone - but I have never sold a knife so maybe wait for somebody else to chime in on that.

Perfect user. That's the sort of find I would've pounced upon for a classic old pattern with some real life history and still ready to go to work. The knife's already got some dings and wear & tear. So, I doubt anything else can significantly alter it's value as a collectible. But it's still in good shape with lots of life left in the blades. If the knife were essentially pristine when you got it, that might be another consideration. But you don't need to worry about that here.

Sharpen it up and use it happily. I know I would.

They work great as intended. This one was my great grandfather's. I carry it deer hunting when feeling nostalgic. Sometimes I carry the 30-40 krag that he sportorized for my grandfather along side it.
My uncle hunted coyotes in Idaho during the depression with a 30-40 Krag. I haven’t heard one mentioned since I was a kid.
