Looking for one as a gift to someone. Of course, since the price is low, I'm not going to expect much, but I'd hope for the best blade (steel) and sturdy lock I could get at that price. Thanks!

For around that cost you can get ya a Spyderco Delica for your friend. For that matter for just a few bucks more get him a Calypso Jr. from New Graham.com. They have the new ZDP189 ones and some of the old VG10 ones in stock. The latter for just over $50.

Take a look at the Spyderco Centofante III. It is $42 and change form NGKs and I absolutely love mine. VG-10 is good stuff.

You can find a CRKT M16 EDC for around that price range. Aluminum handles, decent steel, good lock (w/ the additional security of LAWKS), and I think it would make a very nice gift. The lower priced Spydercos are nice too like STR said, but the FRN handles seem kind of cheap. If the person recieving the gift doesn't know much about knives or steel types, you might be better off with the M16EDC. Also, you might want to consider Kershaw. They have inexpensive knives with good visual appeal and good build quality but the steel they use is on the crappy side.

I recommend Kershaw Leek or Scallion. I bought Leeks as groomsmens gifts, and they were very well received. None of my groomsmen really wore pocket knives previously, and now these guys wear them most of the time!

I bought myself a Scallion before going to Canada for my honeymoon. I just couldn't BEAR the thought of being without an EDC. ;) I figured that Customs would just laugh if they found it in my stuff since it's pretty small. Very nicely produced knife, and it cost ~$35.

TAke a look at the Kershaw Storm, why not? This puupy retails at $50,s o you could probbaly find it for SO much less on thenet.
Nice knife.

looks kinda angry, tho.

Let me second the Confederate's Pika suggestion. Great steel, time-proven all-purpose design (it's an AFCK spin-off), secure backlock.

A ZDP189 Calypso Jr. for a tad over $50 is the ticket. That has got to be an amazing deal. Get that one for your friend. Oh an get me one too while you are at it. LOL ;)

On second thought, I will never pass up a chance to second a Spyderco Centofate III suggestion. Fantabulous knife.
Plus, Frank Centofante is a peach.

Really though, it's an incredible knife. It just feels so damn good. It cuts like a champ. The only reason I don't have one yet is because our wearhouse is OUT! I swear the day it comes in, I'm snagging one for me. Because that is a bitching knife.

For under $40, you can buy a nicely featured swiss army knife. I'd get a Victorinox. They make great gifts and even non-knife people like all those cool tools.

The Byrds are very nice knives. Sure given the choice I would prefere a Caly Jr. in VG-10, but they are quality knives with a more than adequate steel and a decent construction and cost about $20.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys. I have to say, my first post here was a couple days ago and I'm pretty amazed at how friendly everyone is here. Thanks again, I'm going to check out all these suggestions. :)

BM Pika is a great knife and worth twice the asking price. NG has them for 24.99 full size and 21.89 mini. They get a good knife, your only out 25 bucks and since it has the little butterfly on it they will think you spent alot more :D

The Byrds are real good as well but you don't get the prestige factor lol.

delica? hellooo...and I'm surprised nobody mentioned the Ka-Bar Dozier yet.

Of course, there are a lot of slipjionts including SAKs that you can get for less than 40$

I got my best man a Victorinox Soldier. Through some complications with shipping, I got two. So I kept one myself. I can't believe how much I like this knife. Easy to keep crazy sharp, and I've used it for more odd jobs than I would ever have thought. For example, I locked myself out of my apartment with the sliding chain, so I unscrewed the chain from the wall with the bottle-opener/screwdriver at 90 deg. Saved the day =)

And! $24 or so shipped from New Graham.

What's the difference between ZDP189 and VG10 as far as steel qualities go?

VERY good question. I have a gray Caly Jr and the VG 10 is very impressive. The caly Jr is my favorite under 40-50.00 simply because of the amazing VG10. It's supposedly around 59-60Rc which is a fairly hard steel, but very easy to sharpen in my experience. The flat ground blade in the Caly is great, especially for slicing chores. And I like the finger choils which give you more control than the Delica IMHO.

Now, my NEW ZDP 189 CalyJr just arrived today and I just took it out of the box. It has a laminated steel with a center of ZDP and sides of 420J2. The ZDP should be around RC63 which is very hard and the 420 is extremely stainless. In theory, it should hold an edge much longer the the VG10, and still be tough due to the 420. I don't know how hard it is to sharpen... the factory edge is adequate for now, and if I polish it up later, I'll report back.

I have compared VG10 to S30V and I really don't notice much difference. The VG10 takes a somewhat 'toothier' edge, which I prefer. I'm hoping the ZDP will be on par or exceed these in edge quality and holding...

The ZDP caly just was released a few days ago, so hopefully we can start to give some real feedback soon. I and many others have one of each, so we shall see.

EDIT: If I had a another choice, I'd pick the Victorinox Soldier (or farmer). Softer blade steel (which isn't really a big deal, since it is thin, flat ground, and extremely easy to sharpen), but the real beauty is that you can pry, hack, drill, mark, drive hardware, open cans... anything that you shouldn't be using a knife blade for. More compact and classier looking than the very utilitarian Spyderco's.
