So the last night I found myself slightly intoxicated, and my wife decides that the smart thing to do is hide my knives..... Understandable.... But she decides that the oven is the best place for them..... And then forgot about it. When does she remember you ask? About 45 min into cooking her lasagna. Sheath is completely melted, but amazingly no damage to the micarta. Just thought I'd share. Oh, and one question, do any of you think this will affect the blade tempering in the long run?

I can't remember off hand what the temper range is on 1095. I think I tempered my 5160 steel at 400 degrees for 2 hours x 2 cycles.

If the temper range on the steel is lower than that, it may have softened the steel a tiny bit. Probably not noticeable degree though.

Email ESSE and ask them. If there is a concern, they will replace it for you. That is one of the reasons people love the company.

I would be more worried about the handles.

I have been meaning to pick up an ESSE

Probably be a good idea to email them and ask. I'm working on the photos, haven't had time. But ill put one up. And the lasagna was delicious, slightly better than usual... Don't know why.....

I can’t decide if I want to laugh hysterically, cry or just say “WTF?”

So let me get this straight. Your wife takes your knives away from you when you drink. Hides them in the oven. Then when placing the lasagna in the oven, doesn’t notice that there are knives in the way of her 13x9 lasagna pan?

Sounds like she's dangerous with your knives when you drink. You don't hide the food when she cooks, so she shouldn't hide your knives when you drink. Just my 2 cents. :)
BTW lasagna is better with a touch of kydex sprinkled on top.

Good thing she didn't hide the guns in there :D

No joke. My poor Glocks! That would call for desperate measures….

yea, I'm kinda wondering why she feels the need to hide the knives when he drinks...

Half of my knives would'nt fit in the oven.Seriously though,I would have been pissed. It could have ruined the temper of the blade, would contact ESEE for sure.

So that's how it happens. Always did wonder why folks hid guns and knives in the oven. Maybe you ought to consider a safe instead. ;)

400F will not ruin the temper of 1095...I temper mine at 450F. Not sure about any epoxy used to attach the scales though.

This was actually the first time she hid them ( and last) and thankfully this was the only knife not in my safe, because it was on my body armor.

AGAIK, the ESEE scales are just bolted on, no epoxy.

plenty of pix of people removing the scales to strip the coating or molycoat the blade, etc.
