is this metal any good to make a starter knife. It is for welding so i am not sure if its good or not. I can get it cheap, if it is good. Remember this is a starter knife so even if its not that good i would still like to make one quick. I read 5160 is good for starters can i only get this from a sping shop or order it.

This steel contains only carbon and small amounts of molybdenum as alloying elements. I have never handled this alloy so can't give you specifics, but as your first knife give it a try. Because of its lower carbon content it won't produce the most wear resistant edge and would probably do better for knives where toughness is needed like 5160. Let us know.
