Got myself on the ole radio this summer. 40K day hike in the rockies. This is a great 3 day trip, but it's fun to do it in one long day just to test your fitness.

Here's some pics of the place I took from a previous hike (don't have pics uploaded from this one)

On top of the ridge we were around 2800m, so just over 9000ft. The canadian rockies are of a softer stone than their southern counterparts, and so have eroded more quickly (so the Discovery channel tells me:D). We don't get the height they get in, say, Colorado.

I've done a similar 3 day trip just a few mountains over. It's gorgeous up there. I usually try to manage that trip on a 15lb pack including food and water. Like to keep it light.

Thats some amazing terrain. Whats the elevation at?

Great pics! 40k at sea level would be tough enough but at that elevation and through difficult terrain with elevation change would be a good test for sure. How many hours and what do you do for footwear?

That's a great question! I thought about my hiking boots (Scarpa SL ML3) but they are heavy and for a day hike with a light pack I thought I'd go with my running shoes. I have to say, I thought my feet would fall off by the end (we took about 14 hours, but we stopped for many photo breaks and a nice dinner and a rest by a fire some people had going). Apparently 2000m is optimal for training (lots of olympic athletes train around Calgary), but I didn't really feel any effects of the altitude, though I'm used to it perhaps.

If I did it again, I'd try it with my hiking boots I think, though I'm always worried about blisters with them. With the runners, I got fatigued in the feet, especially from all the rock, but no blisters or scrapes.

Great job!!! A 40K dayhike at altitude is just amazing. Post some more pics please.

My buddy talking a breather and watching a storm roll up a valley towards us. Turned out to be sleet and snow (this was an earlier trip, not the radio one).
