What would be good for guards?

I know about 416 but that is very hard to get for me.

Would 410 or 420 be any good?

I tried the 3 series of stainless but that is horrible stuff....

Either of those should work fine, they just won't be as easy to machine as 416. They'd probably be more durable.

I use 410, and like it fine. When I started making knives, I had a big chunk of 1/4" 300 series stainless plate... 410 is WAY easier to work with, enough that to compare it to the 416 I've used is negligible.

A number of us have had to go to 410 for thinner material as 416 was very hard to find in those sizes. it does not machine as easily as mentioned, but it works about the same one you get he slots cut, etc. Much better than the gummy 300 series steel I tried early on. The caveat is that the thin 410 that I have bought came in a fairly hard state and it plays hell with the bandsaw.
