Hello all,

I have a friend who is embarking on building a rifle action from scratch. He needs 4140 steel, round, approximately 2" diamater x 30" length. Any ideas of where to find this?

Thank you for all of your help.

Check local machine shops. tool & die shops, etc. If they don't have it, they can point you in a direction. It's always good to be friendly with your local machinist anyways. I get awesome knife steel cutoffs from mine for CHEAP. :)

Try google. The first result I found for "4140 steel rod" was a company that supplies in smaller quantities. You can order a 4 foot bar from them, though just that bar of steel costs more than any of the rifles I happen to own. :D It's a pretty common steel, from what I gather, so trying to find some scrap might be a good (cheaper) option too.

3' is 52.58 according to the catalog I have, but this one a little out of date call them for an up to date price order # 8927k48
I have delt with these folks for a few years and I'm completely satisfied.
In fact I just ordered a 2" round O-1 bar a few weeks ago.
Thanks,
Del
