I use 416SS for bolsters and find its scratching too easy in soft state.
It seems I read some where soft it's in the 30's RC and can be hardened to mid 40's RC but I can't find my reference now.

Can some one tell me what the RC is soft and what it can harden to?

I'll make one of Goddards one brick forges to harden it up or listen to any method you may be using.

I'm guessing you wouldn't have to grind much off to get the scale and color off?

And finally, can you cut it with your 4x6 saw hard state? Drilling it shouldn't be that big a problem if it's in the 40's.

OK, found my missing Machinery's Handbook.
416SS can be hardened to C43. It can be tempered to C31 @1,000degrees.
Looks like it can go even softer to B89 @1,400 degrees but didn't look up the conversion to RC. A little harder might also make the dings from peening a little smaller also.

Not sure what this means in the real world practice, any comments appreciated.
