After a long vacation and hiding my HI treasures in a box under unsuspiciously looking party supplies it was time to let them out.
These Nepalese beauties weighed in at 42 pounds though 3 of them where not HI but could be counted as their great grand parents of sorts.
Not polished and still under protective grease they are still looking good.

Time to build some wall display. Isn't it? :)

Jens finally comes out of the closet:D I knew you had to be sandbaggin! Very nice stuff! I like them patch knife like ones with the straight horn handles.

Thanks guys. Never enough steel or enough arms to swing all of it.

Ndoghouse,
Lots of sandbagging these days, but as long as I can remember all the stuff I want to do, I should be able to catch up once I retire in 25 years or so. I hope :-)

One of the reasons I finally took a picture of all my HI blades was that I'll be in Reno for my kids tournament tomorrow and
not being able to make time to drop by aunty just doesn't feel right. [emoji15]
I hope showing the collection makes up for it.

The little patch knives are great. Still solid after 100+ years without any pins and only rat tail tangs I bet.
Laha must be the world's best epoxy. I wish they would carry it at the Home Despot.

Will do some packing now for tomorrow.

Our motel, the Grand Sierra was crawling with baseball players when we were there. I felt kind of bad for em it was so gosh durn hot. Guess maybe they is used to it. Course they was young and resilient too so probably didn't bother em much.

Shame you don't get an Auntie visit.

I'll take 2 lbs of #5 please, and half a pound of #8....

You sir have a very good taste in steel.

Reno is at a difficult distance.
2.5 hours. Too far to go there often but also too close to stay there overnight and having to pay a hotel.

Maybe there'll be a few hours after the Taekwondo tournament (luckily indoors and AC) but these events are hard to predict. The last one was scheduled to be over at 1pm and took until 6...
Would hate to tell auntie I'm coming and then we get delayed or even have to cancel and waste her time.

The only way to be sure is to stay 1 day longer and for that I have to find a way to convince my better half. Daughter and son shouldn't be a problem. They are into swords and knives. I wonder why ;-)

I'll do some research on what we can do an extra day in Reno next time and then "coincidentally" swing by auntie.

That is a very nice selection of old and new....it truly is.....

I remember tournaments when younger.....different style, different country, different mentality as to the arts and pretty much everything......but ours ran way over, as well.....we normally had a high ranking or even highest ranking attendee from Japan who also was judge on those aspiring to higher rank, most of day was spent judging kata for those seeking to advance, as well as sparring for same.......then an exhibition in evening including tourney for higher ranking folk and just plain demos for outsiders who came in for evening....that was a VERY long time ago now.
..at least 40 yrs....

My dad took me to those and then was killed by a drunk not three years later.
..i remember those tournaments as if yesterday...your son will too.

Good distance. Truth be told other than Auntie and the rodeo and the car museum and Dino in Reno, not much else really blew my dress up.
Well I guess there was Willy's Gun Shop, and that sporting goods store in Sparks, and Virginia City and free booze while you lose your money a nickel at a time.

I guess there was a lot in Reno that blew my dress up.

I'd surely be visiting Auntie more frequently that's for sure.

Do plan ahead though, surprise visits I don't think are encouraged.

Nice gathering of khuks, Jens. Good luck in the tourney.
Thank you Bookie,
It went well. It was a smaller tournament with only 6 clubs or so participating. I liked it better than the bigger ones. More of a human touch there. Had some bull lassoing training on the side so the little kids didn't get bored waiting for their siblings. They also allowed my 3 year old son to "participate" in the tournament. Everybody was smiling at his attempts and he was happy to get a medal.

I don't know what to say. Sorry for your loss of course but I can't express how I'm feeling about that. Sad and angry and a bunch of other things. Wish it didn't happen like this and also hope the drunk got what he deserved even if that doesn't help you to get him back.

The little tournament was well organized and we got some extra time in Reno. Kids wanted bowling so we did that at the Grand Sierra :-) and wife hadn't seen a circus before so we did that too. At the end it was so late we could have spent the night there. [emoji2]

No way I would surprise visit auntie or anyone. Maybe it's a cultural thing but in my opinion it's kind of inconsiderate.
In my home country if you visit a person, even friend or distant family unanounced they would assume it's only something short and wouldn't even ask you to enter their house.
Now here in America however even the neighbours ask me to enter their houses if I only need some HOA papers signed which takes a few seconds and could be done at the door. Now I appreciate that they are so super friendly but feel uncomfortable to intrude without notice, even if invited.
Long thing short, I'm probably the last guy who would come unannounced.

Glad you liked Reno. I guess we will be going there a few more times too.
:-)

The cultural thing is often simply a hospitality thing......if a stranger arrives, one must offer hospitality, drop everything, feed them, wait on them as an honored guest....here in the USA we often have made a great show of such with basically an open door policy not truly meant at all....in one locality nearby there is a saying i had never heard before, despite being from the Deep South, as someone is leaving, to say "y'all stay for dinner" as a way of saying goodbye....and of course, not meant at all...neither do Americans invite strangers to sleep overnight as a rule..

Whereas many older cultures take the hospitality serious, and will make sure a guest is honored even to overnight accomodation if required (as many a former US GI overseas such as in Europe as to being rescued by locals or even police when drunk and lost can attest).....

And to have company over when not allowed to properly prepare is an insult as it makes the host look bad...not to mention embarrassed if house (such as mine) in a shambles perpetually, or even in bath at time of visitation...

So hardly anyone enjoys unexpected company, and generally they know better...unless they feel it is a business they can visit, or some remarkable person whom they greatly admire and whom they would like to meet, and that desire overcoming propriety.....and unfortunately for Dear Yangdu, she is in both classes simultaneously in the minds of many....which surely must be a true trial at times....especially in the USA....

I was a kid at the time and so was the drunk....we actually as a family told the judge to treat him as a youthful offender as we saw no good coming of a 17yr old being a convicted felon....they did not listen but actually only convicted of Manslaughter in 2nd degree plus probation....pretty much wrecked his ability to ever get anywhere even if he ever was so inclined....as it was, his life was that of a loser, with multiple police reports over the years involving domestic disputes and booze and several marriages failed and trying to get full civil rights back 35-40yrs later and then dying of cancer shortly thereafter.....not a good end....i had always hoped something good would come of it, and maybe still something did at the very end, but only he and God will know on this side of eternity....i hope so...pray for the soul of Kevin Avinger.
