I thought I might ask the smiths a question.

Have any of you ever heard of a forged blade made of 1070 high carbon sandwiched between 420 stainless? What kind of performance might be expected from a 10" blade of this material? What kind of flaws should I look for? Any and all comments ar very much appreciated. Thanks!

Scandinavians use laminated blades often but they are usually either carbon/carbon or stainless/stainless laminates.I don't see the point in mixing carbon and stainless. As for performance what are you going to use it for ? The choice of materials and heat treating is made depending on the intended use. As for flaws stainless and carbon steels have different properties such as thermal conductivity that may cause problems . Maybe someone on the forum has done it.

Daryl Meier has been doing 304 clad material for quite some time.

Performance, would depend on the HT. the 420 would add some corrosion resistance. And support to the 1070 I think. It would be difficult to bring the 420 to full hardness with out overheating the 1070. My guess is the 420 is not fully hardened.
Flaws? welding flaws, look for seperations of the ovelay.

PICS???

I don't know what alloys he uses but Murry Carter has a whole line of kitchen use knives that he makes in this way. If you look in the last blade there is a story on him and also his contact info.

Thanks for the replies gentlemen. You've given me a few thing to think about. The blade in question is on a Gaucho knife that was made by Mission Cuchilleria Artesenal of De los Delicias, Argentina. I have done quite a bit of cutting and chopping in the last three day on various materials. I've tested the edge on 2X4 pine, 1/2" and 3/4" nylon and sisal rope, cardboard, leather, and some natural and synthetic fabrics. I also have used it to prepare several meals, cutting meat and poultry, and chopping vegetables. I have yet to touch up the edge as it still shaves quite nicely. I'll post a pic of it in a day or so.
