that says that sats once a buck knife is dulled it is almost impossible to sharpen...Is this true? I'm sharpen challenged......the review was on hunting knives by chuck hawks...just looking for some clarification

He's full of BS or he just does not know how to sharpen a knife. I have owned buck knives since 1967, and I have not had a problem sharpening any of them. I have a 25 year old 102 woodsman, a 1967 vintage 301 stockamn, and a 303 cadet that was owned by a close friend and co-worker. I sharpen all of them with the little cut down Eze-lap model L I carry in my wallet.

Don't believe alot of what you read.:D

rescue, I think he is refering to the pre 1980 440 C blades, and though they have not been produced in almost 30 years, they leave a legacy and reputation as some of the finest edge holding knives of all time, which, in turn, means some of the hardest to sharpen knives of all time.

The point is moot today. A diamond stone will sharpen any of these older models with little effort. And the 420 HC models are not as good at edge holding, but do plenty well and are easy to sharpen should they ever become dull.

Les Stroud uses a Buck 119 on his Survivorman show and I presume it's a newer model, meaning 420 HC. If it's good enough for Survivorman to use for a week in the wilderness, it will work for you, I can promise.

IMHO the 420hc steel buck uses is very good indeed. In fact I feel it is a bit under-rated for a steel choice by many.

the guy would have probably been right.IF.it was some other brand of knife with 420 steel, but not bucks,if you can't sharpen it with todays sharpening tools,or even a regular wetstone for that matter, you shouldn't be touching a knife, its that easy to sharpen.sorry.no offence

none taken I haven't needed to sharpen my buck beyond a stropping yet, was just asking about what I read

Allex, has it ever been sharpened on a power driven grinder?Sounds like the temper has been compromised on that blade.

No, no way. Manual, on a German stone with very small gems inserts ( the salesman say so :) ). Anyway, a is a fine stone.

I think that is because the critics don't take Bucks heat treat into consideration. That improves the quality and performance right there.
