i am interested in a Buck 112 Ranger as an outdoor user knife. i have no experience with Bucks. is this steel hard enough for garden/bush type jobs (but no chopping, just cutting) ? how does it compare to a 1095 in a Boker or Moore Maker for example ?
thanks, roland

It's a great steel. Not terribly expensive and it is almost as good as steels that cost a lot more. In this case, almost is excellent.

You can't go wrong.

Heat treat is as important as the type of steel. In the case of Buck, with heat treat by Bos, and the backing of one of the most reputable knife companies on earth, it will get you through the day just fine.

420HC the way Buck heat treats it is one of my favorite steels. Takes a scary sharp edge and holds it well, easy to resharpen, tough, stain/rust resistant, and it's affordable. Keep it sharp and it will cut up there with more complex steels such as BG-42.

I have found it to be exceptional. It is ***eeek*** not as good as some of the super steels (imo) but it is a great steel. One of my favorite knives is a Buck 119. I have processed 2 deer with it and it just needed a quick touch up to get back to sharp.

It is great stuff.

Buck does 420HC awesomely (if that is a word).

They have excellent heat treat in my opinion. I have been really surprised with the 420HC actually.
