I have looked through the forums before posting but I couldn't find an answer so I will post my question. I was wondering if Solingen 420 steel is different from American 420 steel. I know alot of knife makers use Solingen 420 to make knives. Is it all hype or is this metal good. 420 is a lower-grade steel from what I understand. Am I a misguided newbie? Kind of off topic but I just bought a Queen mini trapper in bone stag with D2. I am impressed with the fit and finish on this thing. It puts Case to shame in quality. The last couple of Case knives I have purchased I have been disappointed in. Thanks in advance about my question.

Marketing is everything. In the days past Solingen was a major knife and steel town (probably still is). Now days they add the name to anything to make it sound like a quality product.Remember "Genuine Florida Orange Juice" could come from rotten oranges. On the other hand, products from some sources have been historically known to be of a consistent quality. That is why some people prefer steel from only one maker(Hitachi, etc.) or supplier(Admiral,Crucible,etc.).The rule here is ,"Would you make a knife out of this steel without the brand name?" If there is a better choice ,use it.If the steel is a good blade steel,OK. IMHO there are better steels than 420 for a knife.Try ATS34,440V,S30V,S3V,CPM154. - Stacy Apelt
