Looking at a Buck Vanguard. I am wondering how much longer will the s30v hold its edge
The knife will be used for fully processing deer, and small game. Will the edge hold through an entire deer? How much longer compared to the 420hc?

Sharpening time is not an issue, as I love sharpening knives. Also, recommend me a sharpening system for the s30v.

Thanks!

Any Buck will be a great edge. They do 420HC like nobody else. Their S30V is also stellar, with expert HT. Get the Buck you like for the knife, not the steel. I have a Vantage Pro with S30V, and i's like a razor. I stropped it once in 4 years of moderate use. I use a Worksharp on my blades, and the regular belts work amazing.
BTW, my 105 with 420HC, about the same sharpening over 3 years. Moderate use on both, so maybe some harder users might have different experiences.

Thanks for the reply! I already have my sights set on a Vanguard, just wanting to get the best, longest lasting, most useful product out of my purchase.

I like the Vanguard for the handle. Very comfy. I don't, but the S30v, I am sure, would be up to the task. All said, if you love Bucks, stick with what you love! Check out the Buck forum. Those folks know their Bucks!

CJ Buck has said that the company's 420HC is for people who want to spend the least amount of time and effort taking care of their steel.

That's why Buck is a good working mans knife because at the end of a long day, the last thing you want to do is spend time sharpening and oiling. That 420HC works for alot of people and I have a few that hold a good edge and doesn't take much to sharpen.

I would take the Buck in 420HC. I've become more of a fan of the 420 steels for certain outdoor and urban tasks. In my experience it takes a good edge on a stone.
