Hey Tom.
IM surprised that Phil ran it to RC60 I thought 58 was more the range for 420v.
In my testing it is very good and has shown no damage from hard use.
I haven't done a bend test yet but will soon.
As for corrosion it's around the same as 440C.
It wont chop steel like 3V.

As for being too hard, doesn't that depend on what you are planning to do with it? For example, I have D2 knives at 56-58 RC and others at 62 RC. It depends on how much abrasion resistance you want and how much charpy toughness you are willing to give up.

Most (all) of Phil Wilson's knives are very thin at the edge, before the bevel, about .01 to .02", made from thin stock and are designed to high slicing performance so it would make sense to me to have them really hard. Tom what was the design of the knife?

There's a test for toughness that has been around for awhile that works pretty well
to check for edege toughness as far as
chiping-- Put a brass rod in a vise and
lay the blade down as though you were going
to sharpen it and pull the edge across the
rod putting quite a bit of downward pressure on the blade. If it ripples the edge it'toosoft if it chips it a little too hard if it flows up and over the rod it' just right. This is a test of course you should make before you complete your knife so you can remedy by re hardening or retempering.

tried to get the pic to go but im no computer wizard.....to say the least...so if you would like to look at it youll have to check it out under knives on my website.. www.mayoknives.com and thanks again for the input....tom

thank you spark for your help....to anyone who's interested....i just bought a mavica (sony) 91 and it is unreal for using on the net....i got it primarily for my web site but it is a great camera and has a lot of features found on really good slr 35mms... try the site...www.mav-magazine.com as you can see it takes great knife pics...i shot this under 500 watt blue photo floods in my basement in the dark (3 bulbs) and a sheet of art vellum streched across the top of my table at a 45 degree angle...email me if you want any more info....tom

took my new 420 knife to the skeet range today and had to pry it out of a few peoples fingers......the hpd armorer for one....they kept asking me...how can it hold an edge longer than 440v...and i kept saying...i have no idea...thats just what i read...right phil???????

Tom, a little off topic, but I visited your shop Nov. before last, and we discussed making Kydex sheaths. Did you ever try it, if so how did it go?

Cant comment on the steel that you used, as I only have experience with ATS-34 & 440-C. Just wanted to say that it is a very hansom knife. Nice work...

bill= i got some kydex...thats as far as ive gotten...when i tried to tell my wife i had to put some plastic in the oven to melt it i was met with very staunch resistance....i need to find some single guy with a rusted out oven to use.....i live on the edge of the planet and move Very slowly.....have been thinking about getting tim wenger to make my sheaths for some boot knives out of that stuff.....face it...im a knifemaker...i wouldnt even make sheaths if i could find someone that could do it in a timely fashion and i didnt have to send them to america.
