hey guys,

been making my own blades for about 3 years, and have always used 440c or ats34. question. Would the 1084 be easier to get the pits out of then the 440c? I have to use my wheel on my 2 x 72 to do my flats, and by the time I get the pits out, the blade is no longer truly flat. Was wondering if the carbon steel was softer if it would be easier to number one, take fewer passes with less pressure to get the pits out, and two, be easier on my drill bits to drill the holes for pins.

Thanks,
David

I think the real question here is how are you heat treating your 440c
that it comes out pitted. The 440c needs a much different HT than the
1084. Give us some info on how you're doing yours.

this is all before i send them out for HT. I send everything out for ht. I try to not have to do much after it come back, other than just hit the flats and grind with 320 then 400.

Can you get your steel surface ground from Aldo? If you can this will eliminate a lot of that problem.

I haven't used 440C. I have used ATS34, 154CM, CPM154 anf found all of them took more work to get to clean steel than Aldo's 1084. Also I found Aldo's 1084 (and 52100) come cleaner/smoother than 1084 from Admiral and 1080 from Sheffields.
Have you tried carbide drill bits? They are great.
Bruce

Much, if not all, of Aldo's steel is cold rolled so it is very smooth. There are not pits in his 1084. I have some of Kelly Couples 1080 that has been hot rolled and it is full of pits.
