440C vs CPM-154

Given the exact same blade and same HRC how much of a difference would one expect to see in real world outdoor use between these two steels. Would it be enough of a difference to justify the same knife costing twice as much just for the steel upgrade.

Main things I am worried about are:
Corrosion resistance
Ease of sharpening
Lateral strength

I know CPM-154 will more than likely be better on paper in all of these categories but how much better in real world use.

For an outdoor fixed blade I probably would choose something different. Maybe 52100 or 5160? I think those may better suit an outdoor blade if you're talking fixed blades.

It is a fixed blade, one made by Entrek knives the Javalina model. Its 3/16th of an inch thick 4.25 inch long blade.

Also Seelow I have plenty of fixed blades in carbon steels and tool steels for this one I am really wanting a stainless steel.

Ah okay. Nothing wrong with mixin it up.

Kinda thick at 3/16"...

But with it being that thick I would go with CPM 154 to get all of the benefits of the steel, edge retention is in a whole different league than 440C, sharpening would be about the same, as far as stainless goes both steels are very good.

I seriously doubt you would break that knife in either steel unless you tried to.

CPM154 is just an all around better steel, but properly heat treated in a well designed knife most people still won't notice much of a difference in normal use.

Yes, CPM 154 is better, but is not worth twice the price as you said it was in your initial post.

Ray makes a good tough knife. I've had a couple. His Kydex isn't the strongest, but his knives are well made.

Entrek knives are tough as nails. Ray's heat treat and cryo stabilization make for one well behaved knife. I've never had a problem with any of his blades and if anything breaks on the blade, no matter how it happened, Ray will take care of you. So you get a great product with serious piece of mind. Read some of the reviews here on the forum. You won't be disappointed.

Thanks for the feed back guys. I know Ray has mastered 440C and I am sure he will do CPM-154 the same I was just curious because while I have used 440C before I have never had any experience with CPM-154 or 154CM for that matter.

Yeah I heard Ray might be offering some of his knives in CPM-154. Anybody have any ideas on what blades will be offered? I also heard he's going to offer more blade finishes.

I sent him an email he will be doing CPM-154 as well as satin and mirror finishes. He did confirm he will do the Javalina, I am sure if you email him he will let you know what models he will do in CPM-154.
