Anyone got data on this steel. More curiosity than need, selling an old folder I have around though, and saw that steel designated on the blade, and wondering what it is, or how it differes from 440C

Interesting mix, haven't noticed one liek that before. no hardness, but explains why I didn't ever have problems with rust, evne though it was bead blasted(which I generally don't like).

lol @ syl

and thanks fitzo, did a quick search, but hadn't come upw ith anything

Are you sure that the blade is marked 446c or poorly stamped 440c. 446 is not a steel anyone would pick for a knife ,it is a ferritic stainless steel ,can't be hardened and it's normal application is high temperature service.

I wondered about that, too, Robert. At 0.2% C it won't do much of anything hardening. I searched for 446"C" but came up with nothing. I think you're on the right track, it's mismarked 440C.

What brand of knife is this, etp77? YW, BTW...

I'm thinking it has to be mislabeled too, but it's clearly a 6, not a weak steamp or anything that's mistaken.

It's an older(well, 7-8 years, but gimme a break, I'm only 23, 7-8 years is old ;) ) Buck Goliath lockback. Folding hunter. Now if anyone could HT crap stainless into a decent blade, it would be Paul Bos, but it seems that 446 doesn't respond to HT at all by that site, so not sure. GOing to have to look around on web and see what I can find about this knife I guess.

It's definitely harder than any nonhardenable, .2% carbon steel has a right to be. I used to use it for weeks on end at old tent job without more than an very occasional touching up.

What we've been discussing is generic "446", the only listing I could find. This is not to say that Buck didn't have the formulation juiced just for them, and the "C" somehow stands for added carbon. You're right, you certainly wouldn't get that performance from a low-carbon piece of drek.

It's probably a model 446, the Goliath lockback. Why not ask over at the Buck forum?

Now ain't that humorous?? :)

I have often wondered, watching History Channel about the ancients, how often we've attributed "significant meaning" to some cave painting, and all it is is Cousin Ugh saying "Hey, guys, I bagged a mastadon with my own hand. Full moon's this weekend, come on over for a rare steak and a brewski!"? :) DOH!

Definitely shows how little I know about factory knives.
