My friend wants a folder, but he has yet to see the light about true quality pieces. The MAX he is willing to spend is 45 bucks. He wants quality steel, a subdued finish, one handed opening, a pocket clip, and a lbade lenght of aobut 3.5 inches.

I appreciate any help I can get with this. I showed him a lot of what I consider to be great value pieces, but he is rock solid on the price issue.

Thanks.

CRKT M16-03Z
Kershaw Vapor
Camillus EDC
CS Voyager

All would make great low budget knives, I have owned a M16 and Vapor. I would go with the M16.

Try to find a good deal on www.bladeauction.com or even Ebay. I just got a Paragon X-O Lite Auto NIB on ebay for $55. As long as you weed out the crap you can find a good deal. Also try the "knives for sale" forums

I would suggest either the Spyderco Delica (3"blade) or Endura (3 15/16"blade). They are both in that price range and are very durable and dependable workhorses, especially the Endura.

The steel is VG-10, FRN scales with volcanic grip pattern, Spyderco Trademarked Hole, ambidextrous pocket clip for left/right hand tip-up carry, and choice of PlainEdge, SpyderEdge, or 50/50 combo.

You can't go wrong with a Spydie. ;)

Good Luck

I'll second the Cold Steel Voyager. Actually, the medium ones are about 3.0 inches, but it's all good.

I say go with CRKT in that price range, You can get a M16 or even a Kasper model and they are great knives.

What steel do you guys like in the Endura? On ebay there are models that have each of the following, new: G-2, AUS 6, AUS 8, ATS-55, and VG-10. I'm assuming that these are merely different editions (years of production). The ats-55 seems to be the current steel. Is it the best?

Thanks.

Mark

Your friend IS looking for a Spyderco FRN (VG-10) Delica or its' slightly larger brother, the Endura...Maybe even a FRN Native.

Minjin, the current steel used in the Delica and Endura is VG-10. Although the ATS-55 is good, I prefer the VG-10.....you can achieve an absolute RAZOR SHARP EDGE!!! ;)

Delica VG-10 FRN PE is the way to go - I just got one and very pleased. Great value and quality.

In this price range, a lightweight Delica or Endura is the way to go. The quality of the steel is what clinches the deal.

Incidentally, I have a plain-edged Endura in ATS-55 and love it. I haven't had any problems with this steel staining, but some folks here on the forum allegedly have. Because of that, I'd definitely chose the latest model that has VG-10 steel. Any way you look at it, Spyderco gives you about the best bang for the buck and they really stand behind their products.

I sent him the link to this post, and after looking at them online, he has opted for the Plain Spearpoint M16. I said Spydie, but he likes the looks and subdued colors of the M16 series. He couldn't believe taht there was a place that I could post questions on gear and have reasonably knowledgable people answer. Anyway, you helped a lot. Thanks, guys.

Both of these brands have nice folders for under $ 45 when you look for sales.

Too late I guess, but I was goiung to say that if subdued finish is important, CRKT is the ticket:
Kasper
Point Guard
M16
Prowler
