I'm pretty much out of the loop as far as the latest in firearms stuff, I tend to shoot what they give me...Hehe.

We get the monthly "Police" magazine, and they had an article this month on the new .45 Glock Auto Pistol ( Model 37 ) and it's round, a shortened and otherwise modified .45 ACP.

According to the mag, the thing pretty much delivered as promised, providing a somewhat more compact weapon with pretty much of the ballistics of the standard ACP round.

Any thoughts on this one? Flash in the pan? Yet another confusing choice for law enforcement agencies and private buyers?

We've been carrying the M23 for about 7 years now.

I don't know much about it either. To me it seems like the only benefit is if your trying to carry concealed. So for police use, its an answer in search of a problem. Your carrying openly so the difference in size doesn't matter a whole heck of a lot. I'd rather have something time tested like .45ACP or 9mm where there are a million choices out there for ammo and stuff.

I saw it last year at the SHOT show and can't say I was overwhelmed with the concept. I guess if .40 cal Glock owners feel under-gunned it offers something in the same frame size (why .40/.357sig shooters would feel that way I do not know).

I really don't care if it flies or dies, as I won't be changing to it either way.

It has it's place. However, I think it's a small one.

Sure some competition guys will pick up on it for some edge in their particular game.
However, I don't see me getting one or it hitting it off big.

I sometimes think they do these things so they can name a cartridge.
Ruger has done it twice in the last few years.

I would rather see Glock work on a carbine myself:D

.45 GAP was developed to shoehorn a "FortyFive" - for no real reason other than the name recognition of the caliber - into the Glock medium (17/22) frame.

Glock felt there was a large enough population of folks wanting a "45" caliber pistol in an envelope smaller than the current G21, to justify producing a proprietary round that offers no advantage over 45ACP- the ONLY benefit is a slightly smaller frame/grip.

Glock sells a LOT of pistols, so I suppose they know best, but IMO 45GAP is destined for the dustbin of history.

If the G21 is too big, the .40SW G22 is the same size as the 37, holds more ammo (with preban/LEO mags), and gives up very little in terminal performance. And, you can buy ammo anywhere, in a variety of bullet weights and designs.

Or, the G36 is a lot smaller than the 22 or 37, and shoots a standard 45ACP. The G37 is an answer to a question nobody asked - of course, that was also said about 40SW, so YMMV!

Totally agree. And unlike the 40, the 45GAP would seem to exacerbate the 45ACP's *weakness*, which is poor performance out of short barrels!

I like 45 best, but I don't see any reason not to use a 40S&W HP if you need a smaller frame. They do pack a good punch.

I guess it remains to be seen. Personally, I don't see the draw.
.45ACP is my favorite centerfire round for a semiauto handgun, but I think rounds like the .40 S&W, and the newer .357 Sig may have gobbled up the market for "mid-sized" cartridges.
No telling what people might go for, and departments or agencies might adapt, based on the whim of a particular person, but like has already been said, it seems like an answer looking for a problem (do we need a bigger, less powerful alternative to the .40 all of a sudden?).
When the .40 came out, I immediately got a Glock 23, just to try something new. Had serious doubts about its universal acceptance, though.
How wrong I was, especially after more than the standard 180gr. loads became available.
I thought the .357 Sig was going to be a flash in the pan, too, though I was personally very attracted to a bottleneck round in a standard caliber. Just didn't think it would fly.
Looks like I'm 0 for 2, so the .45 GAP will probably be the most popular caliber ever:p

i dont think the GAP will set the world on fire, although the ballistics sound pretty good on it, have read some articles on it and the MV is pretty hefty, i think it will fail though 'cuz the glock pistols chambered for it arent the same size as the 19/23 series, kinda like a glock 19 lower and a 21 upper, if was the same size externally as the 19 i would say good idea, if a want a .45 i'll just get a glock .45ACP and have done with it. already have a 357SIG and love it, but that high dollar ammo i dont love, am sure the 45 GAP ammo wont be cheap for a while, if ever. the muzzle velocity #s suprised me though, dont remember the #s but they were as high/higher than posted though, so the thing should work ok anyway i would think, as long as it has good bullets anyway

imho a exercise in futility, everything glock touches turns from water to wine though, so what do i know, LOL?

I don't know about the GAP, and I don't think it will make it that far in the industry. Hell I'm not really sold on the WSM, WSSM, and Ultra Mag calibers either. But then again, I was wrong about the .40S&W years ago, and the .357 SIG. I'm guess I'm just old fashioned.
