$450 for a Benchmade 705?

I wouldnt pay that much for a benchmade...but thats just me

I am sure it is a nice knife

but I rather have a CRK woody :)

That's an incredible price for a very ordinary knife. I don't even find the "sweep" an aesthetic improvement. I guess they aren't kidding, but even with a lower street price, I can't see this as a big seller.

How can you consider a Benchmade with all that extra machining and anodizing, inlays on the AXIS bar, and a damascus backspacer a very ordinary knife?

Sure, it is expensive, but with only 100 made, they will be hard to find.

I think they are trying to follow the lead of some other production companies. Chris Reeve charges how much for a production knife? Emerson charges how much for a Emerson Collectors Association knife? Camillus is charging how much for some of their collaborations? Selling price on the net will drop and there are enough fans of BM and this design that it will sell. I just wouldn't pay that much for a production piece.

I think the whole point of these "custom" Benchmades is to buy one and sit on it; in other words, wait for the price to go up one day so you can sell it again. ;)

There's only ONE of these. I would sell it for $450.
Just have to "sit on it" for a while.

As much as I love Benchmade knives, there's NO WAY I'd spend $450 for ONE folder...Even if I had it to spend. Hell, for $450, I can buy 3 or 4 "regular" Benchmade folders!

Sorry, somebody had to do it. :)

Back on topic, knife is nice, but it's not *that* nice. 'Course if they wanna *give* me one...

It looks cool and everything... $400 for a Benchmade? Probably not for me!

$400 I can get a nice Gen 6 SnG - with Rick Hinderer frame lock stabilizer!

Even if you put the price aside.... There is NO clip! There was no clip on the other Gold class knife, with the MOP inlay either. You just have to have a clip on it.

Plus I think they should look at making knives just for the Gold class line. Not taking a regular model and tricking it out. For $400 it needs to be more special, then an upgrade model. (Yes, I know of the 180whatever fixed blade)

BTW What is the handle made out of? Ti? Steel? Alu?

Hmm, I'm guessing the $450 price tag is the MSRP, so let's keep in mind it would probably be sold on the Net for around... $225-250? (Online dealers usually have around a 40-50% discount...at least in my experience)

That's not crazily outrageous, though probably more than I would spend. :)

Lavan, I think you are trying to take advantage of us eager collectors. I bought one just like that on Ebay for only $200 from a nice Nigerian fellow. :D

Lavan,

Lucky for you, it appears that "sitting on it" at least won't be too uncomfortable! :-)

This has been discussed before on the Benchmade forums. I'll see if I can dig up the thread some time soon.

The 706 looks very similar to a 705, but it is supposedly a whole new design. If I remember, it didn't go into any deep details since it's not released yet, but there are differences.

After all is said and done, I probably won't end up owing one of these either. It's just a bit too much for a rather plain looking knife. I'd much rather throw a few more $$$ towards a 940DM. :D Now *that's* a sharp looking knife for being a production knife.

There are more than 100 people who have the money to spend on this knife. Benchmade makes knives for people of all income levels.

I talked to an engineer at Benchmade and he said the Gold Line knife I asked about sold out in a day!

Don't count on seeing any of he Gold Line discounted on the web.

They will be, and have been, sold at a discount already. I've seen 2 960CFP sell on ebay for below the $600 retail price, quite a bit below actually. Another one did not meet reserve. A 180DM was also sold on ebay. There is a 940DM on ebay now for well over retail. No bids. No suprise.

Having talked to at least 2 dealers that will be getting at least some of the gold line in, they have both said they will be selling them at somewhat of a discount. Maybe not as much as thier normal, but at some.

Either way, most of them are still out of my range.

When someone talks about a sebenza, hordes jump on with the "It's too much for a production knife" sneer. Where are those people now?
