Hello, I have been researching knife companies for a few years now and I know of a lot of good ones, but there always seems to be more if I look hard enough, so I thought I would ask you guys specifically what companies you know of that make good production and/or custom knives from $400 to $600 that are fairly available. I already know of: chris reeve, strider, microtech, mikkel willumsen, brian tighe, william henry, hinderer, red horse, brous blades, guardian tactical, boker, bastinelli creations, protech, tsf, olamic cutlery, les george, lionsteel, benchmade, htm, adv, ars, bad blood, burchtree bladeworks, chad nell, deviant blades, des horn, doc shiffer, extrema ratio, ferrum forge, kingdom armory, medford, kramer, matt cucchiarra, mikov, philip booth, pohan leu, sheepdog, sniper bladeworks, spartan blades, steenkamp, tim britton, tom wilson, turnbull, viper, winkler, and yellowhorse. I'm looking for folders primarily, but if there are some really cool smaller fixed blades, you can include them. I also am not into traditional folders or slipjoints. Any suggestions are appreciated.

You can find pre-owned Darrel Ralph stuff in that price range.

I make fixed blades easily within your budget too ;)

It seems like all the Lamberts I can find are about $800 and up. Also, I can't buy anything off of the forums.

You've complied a pretty good list right there, by the time you go through everyone on the list you'll have sidetracked into an equal amount of new companies.

Do a search on all those companies listed by you and each one will yield some kind of comparative knife info, after all its what we do here.

Also, I can't buy anything off of the forums.

I hope you are not saying this because you think you are restricted. As far as I know, any member can buy off the forum. Higher memberships than yours are only required for selling on the forum.

I've bought/traded LNIB knives on the exchange here, and would highly recommend it. You'll get new condition for a discount.

Me, too. Many, many, many times. And even more than that. 99% of the knives that I have purchased have been FROM the Exchange. If you EVER receive a knife that is NOT as advertised...you send it back. The folks that SELL on the Exchange are forced to list most knives condition pretty clearly, as everyone fears to received poor feedback if the buyer is dissatisfied. Also, buying/selling using PayPal Goods and Services provides more protection, particularly to the buyer.
Try it; you'll like it...and you'll save a bundle.

Include Brad Southard AVO folder...my favorite EDC...

I didn't catch Busse combat or swam rat. Both offer some amazing tough ass fixed blades in a bunch of different sizes. Might wanna give them a look!

Triple Aught Design makes a pretty nice folder called the Dauntless, and many of those makers you listed have made their own version of it for them. The custom versions are tough to find but do pop up from time to time.

For your first in this price range I would go with the first company you mentioned.
I think their QC is the best of any, and when you're getting your first high dollar folder you want it to be perfect when it shows. I also think it's the best design out there. JMHO.

And if you go with a fixed blade there are a ton of custom makers that make really great knives. I much prefer custom fixed blades over production, though Busse also makes some great fixed blades.

Impressive list! You have certainly greats mentioned - check out what the good folks at Ferrum Forge are cranking out these days. That cost is their sweet spot and all the materials are top tier.
