I just realized that my 472-5s have different pommels. Was this factory or did someone change the the pommel in the last 80 years?

No clue! The 1 in the middle looks like someone tuned a new pommel to shorten the grip possibly.

Purely visual though. The OAL Is the same on the grip. But I know now why, in later production knives Kabar went with a flat top pommel. The round top kind of gets in the way. It hits your palm. But you are right that it feels smaller when holding it.

Top photo, bottom knife is an earlier model. I call those "blob" pommels due to their more bulky shape. They will be found on the earliest production KA-BARs although it is unknown when the change to a more refined looking pommel occurred. It was likely only a couple of years before they changed to the more refined pommel since most knives will have the pommel on the top knife yet there are a lot of "blob" pommels around. Not sure of what you are referring to as a "flat top" pommel on later knives. If you are referring to the military knives it was only because they wanted a cheap easy to produce without casting pommel and had nothing to do with better grip. I don't have large hands and any of the aluminum pommel knives all feel fine in my grip. Also they made several early model knives with no pommels at all, just a thin flat nickle silver cap, and one model with no pommel or cap, just plain stag.

G gunsil Thank you once again for your wisdom Gene. With the flat top pommels I was referring to the current production knives like the little finn as an example. My hands are large and that style pommel feels better in my hand. But I still enjoy using History so i work around the older pommels. Thanks again Gene.
