It would seem all 498 etc are not created equal just because the number starts with a 49 doesn't mean it is a bench made knife. It would also appear that some of the benchmade knives don't have a hallmark or date stamp but have what has been described as a spider web on the butt and guard I haven't a clue what that is about it isn't mentioned in the article on 49ers or shown. I shall continue to persue a benchmade through the dusty halls of E-bay till I get one cornered.

Hi lfb, i'm not familiar with the 49'ers, so would you be able to post pics of the variations as you acquire them in the dusty halls ?

Check this link to Jsim's collection: Nice '49ers! Nice photography!

For a "user" I prefer full-tang with two separate handle slabs construction (never comes "loose") to the one used in these and many other classic hunting knives but they are some of the most beautiful fixed blades Schrade produced. Real old-school. I love 'em!

Thanks guys. i do like the look of the finger grooved stacked leather handle ones. these are one of the few Schrade patterns i do not have.

They remind me of the handles on custom fishing rods I used to make. Stacked cork rings instead of leather but I always filed and sanded custom finger grooves into finished handle to fit the owners hand perfectly. After having them hold it I would mark their grip on rough handle and then do final shaping. Classy knives and the rods I made were pretty cool too!

I snuck out a proper 498 and a 225 OT for to much money but you only live once so what the heck now if I can get the sheathes corraled all is well
