Do you have any other information ( tang markings or a picture )? It is tough to know what you have from the scant information. After WWII and Korea there were many parts left over from various military models often these were changed a bit and offered as civilian hunters by various companies. While that may very well not be the case this time I have found when asked this qustion that it often is. Sorry I cannot more. Rich

I just seen a Schrade 498 for sale, Fixed blade all it had was the number 498 on one side and Schrade on the other side of the tang, a black molded handle. When was this Scharde put out? Does anyone have the particulars on it and what its value might be?
Thanks  ptgramma

The model #498 was one of Schrade's “49ers” series of knives, and it was manufactured from 1973 until 1979. The handle of these knives was manufactured in two different versions; one was a stag handle (498S), which last retailed for $18.00 in 1979, and the other was leather-wrapped (498L), and it retailed for $19.50 in 1979. In 1983, we brought the 498S back for one more year, and it still retailed for $18.00.

The black handle could have been a customization, which isn't really uncommon with the rigid blades that were originally leather wrapped. After many years without treating the leather, it tended to dry-rot, and it was a really tough design to replace unless you are a skilled leather worker. The alternative was to replace the handles with another material.

Thank you UH Fan. I really appreciate the detailed history. What do you think is going to happen now that Schade is gone? I have 8-10 pocket knives and don't know if I sould sell them now or wait. Seems eBay is flooding the market right now.
Thanks again

Why sell them at all? Unless of course you really have to.

That's about the situation --- SS is not enough to hang onto things---getting old --- house is bursting at sides --- just a few reasons. But you fellows are the best helping me out on my questions

Gramma.. I guess the term 'strike while the iron is hot' applies here. Ebay is always an option, and if you are not a dedicated collector, why now sell 'em?

We have an opening here for 'Forum GrandMother'... shall we sign you on?

Phil

ps... I saw your post over at the Camillus forum. The Camp knife you show, the model 99, was listed in the first big camillus post war catalog, 1946, and was in production for a long, long time. I do not think it was ever issued to the military. The can opener doesn't look right to me to be one of the Military knives. However, it does appear in excellent condition.

Entails absolutely nothing... except the occasional batch of chocolate chip cookies.

Sincerely,
Phil

Been trying to get back here to let you know I would be delighted to be the forums Grandmother or Gma for short and that I do bake a mean cookie
ptgramma ;)

Al right Gma! Just what we need to make us all feel right at home.

BTW, I've seen some of your stuff on eBay. I commend you for making the effort to educate yourself on the knives you have put up for auction. Too many sellers do not do that and end up with inaccurate descriptions of their auctions.

Awright, Gma! It's official then.

On a more serious note, I agree with CRH. You also make more $ the better your description is... but you know that, being a 'power seller' and all.

Phil

About that Power Seller thing---it is a fluke, first time ever, I can't sell enough to maintain the standing but it is nice for awhile. I sold a old bamboo rod and creel and had NO IDEA! I would like to find a dozen of those, good good sale---anyway that put me over the top to get the power seller thing, now unless I find a sleeper I will lose it. Such is life
BTW boys & girls I am working hard on those cookies soon to arrive.
Gma

Oh boy, Gma, I bet the bidding on that bamboo flyrod just blew yer mind. That would be anyone over the top. Thanks for stopping in, and don't forget us anytime you need help with an old Schrade.

Cookies, yummy.
