Please consider joining us for the 2011 Fire and Brimstone Hammer-In and Smelt on March 26th.-27th. 2011 in Historic Marriottsville, Maryland

Jesus Hernandez will be running our tatara(steel smelt) and Tony Swatton will once again be coming to show us how to make and use the tools we all want! Deker will be there demoing some mosaic pattern welding and other stuff. Additional demonstrators and lectures will be happening all weekend. We will have forging on our power hammers as well as metal casting. Event will be at our forge (Baltimore Knife and Sword Co.) and the Church/Studio next door (Fire and Brimstone Studio).

We have just purchased a number of large wood turning lathes and spinning lathes and will be finding demonstrators who can give us some hands on lessons.

Hopefully the Nazel 4B will be up and running. It is installed in place but need some love. The Beaudry is on foundation and should be rocking soon! John Larson will of course be bringing hammers for sale and demonstrating and anyone with tools or machines for sale or trade is encouraged and welcome.

Additional confirmed demonstrators we will be working into the schedule include Jeff Pringle, Deker, Larry Nowicki, Chris Price, Kerry and Matt Stagmer. If you are a demonstrator or are planning to come and have something to share, please touch base as we would like to pack in as much information as possible for attendees. As always we will try to allow as much hands on with demonstrator oversight as possible.

We will be limiting attendance to 60. Registration will be $75 for the entire weekend to offset our costs. Vendors and tailgating is encouraged at no additional fee and will have separate parking, trailers allowed.

Please visit our site http://www.fireandbrimstone.com

The site will include accommodations, Schedule, and Artists/Demonstrators. We are still rebuilding the site but it is live now and registration is open. I will be talking to the local hotel to see if we can get group rates. Breakfast and lunch are provided, grills are open for anything you wish to bring or share! Camping is encouraged but weather in Maryland is always suspect! The later dates should help us out quite a bit. The first year we had snow, 2nd year it was down right warm and sunny, 3rd well we had a little water.... There are bathrooms(spot-a-pots) but no showers.

We will be updating the site often as we confirm additions to the event.

This just in..... Doug Seward and his BBQ have confirmed..... The raisins are already soaking...Also John Smith will be doing some japanese style demos as well.

Thanks for looking and I hope to see some of you in a few months!

This is a very special event, I have been to the latest 2, missed the first, I will go to the F&B event for the rest of my or it's life!!! Last year saw 4 of the major steelmaking traditions in REAL life, wootz, shear steel, bloomery steel, and damascus steel. There probably has not been more than a handful of places in the world this has happened!

Thanks Sam. This event means a lot to me. We try to make sure everyone goes home with a years worth of knowledge to digest.

I should also mention that Sam Salvati will be demonstrating a neat power hammer set up for tong making. Should be a blast.

4th annual, 4th time I'll be there demonstrating! I'm tentatively planning to do a traditional Viking style composite blade weld-up as my demo.

It's a fantastic event. If you're within a day's drive you should really try to make it.

If you weld it, I will grind it and HT it and mount it during the weekend. :)

This will be my second trip out to the F&B Event. I arrainged my travel schedule last year just so I could be sure and be there again this year! It was a flood of information, demonstration, frienship and food.....(Oh did I say flood...ok, that too but no one cared!).......an outstanding event!

Thanks for putting this together again. I agree with Sam....where else can you see such a range of expertise in one location!

Can't Wait...see you guys there!

Would you be up for maybe doing some bronze casting of the mounts? :D

I can do the models up. I've been wanting to try a new method that's a bit pricey, but really trick. I'll just need some of the room temp RTV to make molds to pour the waxes in since the original material might not hold up to the curing heat of the regular stuff.

Hmmm. Maybe. That might be a good idea. I have been practicing sculpting viking parts in steel but we could do a set in bronze. Would make it go faster I guess. I will pass that along to Ker.

When I say "pretty trick" I mean having the masters 3D printed in plastic BTW... :)

Sounds good my friend. Kerry says yes. Can you email us a pic of the fittings as they sit now so we can plan it and how soon can you get it here for molding and what not?

Lost the original CAD files, so I'll be re-doing them. Once I've got them done I can have plastics in 24-48 hours from this place. I'll give you guys a call later today with a few questions I have.

This will be a great project Deker. Will be a neat process. Ive seen the guard 3d rendering and with a little tweaking it will be a nice one! Dek is working on the pommel now.

The snow has us bound here at the shop. We will have to wait for a melt before the forge area gets roof :(

How long does it usually take to fill up? (in other words, how long do I have to convince my wife?) :)

I'm thinking on tweaking it a bit more...I was originally planning a Petersen Type X hilt setup, but I'm thinking a more interesting form for the guard might be fun. Not as "proper" since I'm thinking of mixing a pattern welded blade with a later period hilt that would have been on a monosteel blade, but this is all supposed to be fun right? :)

When do I need to decide, and have masters to you guys by?

It would be nice to get a poor in ahead of time to see how it all vents and make sure we have one good copy for the event. Martha Stewart it.

I can have back ups planned.

The major change in the smelts this year is that we will be building a tatara that is reusable this year. In the past 3 years we built versions that had to be torn all the way down each time. This just needs a slight recoat of refactory on the inside and you can fire it right back up. Should be neat being able to smelt that way anytime we want.

I'm going to try to make it down this year if i can =)

You better hurry up on that car project then or you'll be pulling a Fred Flintstone to get here! :)

Matt, I'll try to get the models polished up this weekend and sent off for you guys to take a look at . If all looks good, I can send them to printing next week.

All in one area and I'm in South Dakota, Dangit, looks like i'll have to save up some vacation for next year.

Dek I have an idea of epic nature for that viking hilt. I think we need to keep it hush hush though and unveil it at the event...check your pms
