4th of July Giveaway

Being a fairly patriotic guy, the 4th of July is my favorite holiday. On this day in 1776 a group of brave men did declare and affirm man's right to self-governance and I am humbled by their actions. This year I'm celebrating with a giveaway with a patriotic theme.

The prize is a Cold Steel Laredo Bowie knife:

I have selected--sort of at random--a colonial patriot who helped create the United States. This individual was alive in 1776 and demonstrated bravery and belief in the cause of freedom and self-determination.

Here are the rules:

1) You must guess the patriot I have selected. If no one has correctly guessed by the end of the 4th, I'll select a winner at random from the list of submissions. Winner to be announced once I wake up on the 5th after celebrating on the 4th.

2) You must be 18 and legally able to own this knife.

3) You do not need to be a US citizen, but you must love liberty and freedom. Please feel free to say so.

4) Submissions must contain the following: A patriot's name and what he or she did to help found this country and further the freedom of all men. E.g. George Washington: led the colonial army to victory against the British forces of tyranny during the war of Independence. (George is not the correct answer.)

5) No redundant guesses, i.e. you can't guess George Washington if someone else already guessed George Washington. Besides, the answer isn't George Washington.

6) Spurious, disrespectful, or thoughtless entries will be ignored and may be jeered.

7) One guess per member please.

My guess is Paul Revere famous for his "Midnight Ride" April 18th, 1775 was a messenger in the battles of Lexington and Concord. He was also an officer in the Penobscot Expedition. Didn't turn out so well.

Francis Marion (the swamp Fox) lead groups of rebels in a series of Guerillas style attacks against opposing british forces.

Alexander Hamilton joined the New York militia and was an artillery captain. He became senior confidant to General George Washington, and led three battalions at the Siege of Yorktown.

Ethan Allen, born here in Litchfield county he was a farmer, businessman, land speculator, philosopher, writer, and Revolutionary War patriot and hero.

How about Nathan Hale, who graduated from Yale and risked desth to spy for George Washington. He was hung in September 1776. His most notible Quote:

“I only regret that I have but one life to lose for my country.”
 
RR...that was my first thought. :)

I'll say Samuel Nicholas, the first officer commissioned in the Continental Marines and leader of the first amphibious landing by Marines at Nassau, Bahamas.

While not a military leader or guerrilla fighter, he is credited as being foundational to the roots of American values and character, a marriage of the practical and democratic Puritan values of thrift, hard work, education, community spirit, self-governing institutions, and opposition to authoritarianism both political and religious, with the scientific and tolerant values of the Enlightenment. In the words of Henry Steele Commager, "In Franklin could be merged the virtues of Puritanism without its defects, the illumination of the Enlightenment without its heat."[3] To Walter Isaacson, this makes Franklin, "the most accomplished American of his age and the most influential in inventing the type of society America would become.

I'll go with John Adams. He was a key individual in leading the congress to adopting the decleration of Independence.
 
Thomas Paine: A very outspoken Founding Father, he advocated colonial America's independence from the kingdom of Great Britain. He was an intellectual and an inventor, and wrote a fantastic pamphlet called Common Sense, and he took the religious freedom America espoused seriously.
 
I'm guessing John Hancock, political patriot, congressman, leader of Boston during the time of the Revolution and...the guy with the unmistakeable signature on the Declaration of Independence.

John Hancock for signing the Declaration of Independence with large stylish letters. So the brits could see his name stand out.

Thom Paine was stolen! Hehe.

Let's go with John Jay. Cool guy. Led the federalist party and was a main opponent to slavery. Politcian, diplomat, and chief justice.
