5.1 or 4.5 bushcraft ?

I ordered a 5.1 in 3v in May, 2016 during a pre-order and now I am wondering if I should have bought a bushcraft instead? My current numbered 5.1, sits with my camping/hiking bag ready to go and see very little use everyday. I order an new 5.1 to use daily at the least that was the idea, but it does not cut hard vegetables due to the thickness. It acts more like a wedge. On hard veggies the last portion seems break rather then be cut by the knife, hence the reason I was thinking 4.5 and maybe 20cv instead of 3V due to washing all the time.
I currently use an older BM 140 Nimravus 154CM with the g-10 scales or whatever they are, for here at the house mainly kitchen but do use in the garden/outside also. It fits my hand very well. Understanding that the 4.5 has yet to be seen, should I keep a the 5.1 on order or should I call/email to see if i can change my order to the 4.5. This knife, 5.1 or 4.5, is to replace the BM 140 as an everyday use for here at home. Yeah I know one hell of an expense kitchen knife that can be used for other things too!!!

PS: I am thinking that I have about 1 more year in waiting in line for the GSO-5.1, is that to long for guessing or am I completely off base?

Dude, I like how you're thinking through how you'll use the knife. It's easy to over look that critical aspect when enamored with a shiny new purchase.

I totally get the wedging effect on peppers and onions and apples. One thing to note is that the 4.5 is only available in 3v. The delta 3v will be stain resistant, but not stainless.

Depending if the new 5.1s cut in the current production line I'd prepare for at least a year wait. I know SURVIVE! is working to improve, but there's a lot of models in line right now.

The thickness was why I sold my GSO 5.
Honestly, if you are happy with the 5.1 with everything except food prep, I'd look at simply adding a Victorinox parring knife to add to your kit. $5-10 on Amazon.

Very good advice!

But... but... this is a place where we encourage and enable others to buy more SURVIVE! knives.

Stop being so practical :D

Sorry guys. I'm not sure what I was thinking.
Replace "parring knife" with GSO 10.

It would be great if Survive could produce a longer version of the 4.5 in a stainless steel, but even if this model did eventuate it would probably be at least 1.5 years down the road.

Good point as usual SN. The 4 Limited is in 20CV though, and its very similar to the 4.5. Not sure if they're sold out yet or not.

I have a 4.7 in 20CV and feel like it's about the perfect compromise. I wasn't sure about 3V due to it not being stainless, and I thought the 5.1 might be a tad large for me (I'm a smaller guy) to do the finer tasks with.

its only the blade thickness that I want to change. Thats why I was thinking the 4.5 bushcraft.

Wasn't there some discussion at one point about S!K offering a line of kitchen blades? I don't recall if it was customer request or if Guy or Ellie mentioned it though? Regardless, it wouldn't be anytime soon.

Sounds like the GSO 4 Limited is what might fit your needs. .125" tk and 20cv.

Here is an idea why not have the blade cerakoted(sp?) like the 4.7's and my BM 140 is coated. So how well is cerakote holding up with use and water/moisture. And add some beeswax under the G-10 handles would that not be the best protection for the d3v and still be useful?

The GSO-4 Limited is sold out.

It was talked about. I plan on using my 4.5 as a kitchen knife

I had the same issue. But I carry a folder that goes through food like a paring knife. It's thin and VERY sharp. The 5.1 is my favorite knife because it can do a lot of things very well but it doesn't do everything well, like skinning fish or, in your case, food prep.

10" paring knife ??? Somewhere is saw that done ! The natives took a large jungle knife , wrapped most of the blade with leaves for protection ,leaving a few inches for a paring blade !!
